ZAKKIA | 2017 Collection 02

I'm sharing some exciting news from Zakkia today, with a peek at the their 2017 Collection 02. Founder Swede-turned-Sydneysider Sara Lundgren has revisited her roots, exploring a darker side this season. The new pieces draw inspiration from a winter spent in Sweden where the mornings are icy and the waters frozen, where the sun barely makes an appearance and the trees are bare. Experimenting with new materials such as frosted handblown glass, silver metal and painted ceramics, she says "there is something exciting about pairing the texture of mouth blown glass with the shiny surface of our silver finish to create a new feel."

Sara and fellow designer Hollie Paterson have created a range of pieces for the home that are both beautiful and functional. Evoking a sense of calm, they feature the timeless shapes that have become the staple for Zakkia. In addition to the new silver finishes, mouth blown glass and hand painted ceramics, the collection includes a new slow drip coffee brewer, botanical vases, glass straws and mirror hooks.

The new collection will be available online and in stores throughout Australia September 2017.

HAY HOUSE in Copenhagen

With a few extra days to explore Copenhagen following 3daysofdesign, a trip to Hay's flagship store Hay House was on my must-do list. Located in the heart of Copenhagen in a grand apartment building on Østergade street, the huge store offers the full Hay design experience. This includes furniture, lighting as well as the full range of accessories and Hay Mini Market, showcased across two generous floors. A thoroughly enjoyable visit exploring the store and looking through all the collections, here are a few photos I took along the way.

Photography by Michelle Halford for TDC

Hay House Copenhagen is located Østergade 61, 1100 København K, Denmark.

For those based down under, The Hay House concept was introduced in Australia last year by Cult and follows the same apartment layout over two floors including a permanent installation of the Hay Mini Market concept, offering a wide selection of accessories, from lighting and textiles to stationery and glassware. The store is located at 285A Crown St, Surry Hills, Sydney.

Mim Design Brings Mid-Century Vision to Life

A classic mid-century home in Melbourne’s leafy east has been given a new lease of life by Mim Design. Capturing the hallmarks of the modern architectural movement, Mim have transformed the once dark and cramped single-storey Caufield North home into a timeless beauty with ample windows that open up the interior spaces and bring the outdoors in.

Filled with natural light, the open plan kitchen and dining area is lined with Crema Cararra Marble and fluted/ribbed cabinetry detailing. A round dining table from Grazia & Co has been paired with the elegantly sculptural DC09 Chairs in walnut.

The original 1964 Harry Ernest-designed home had caught the eye of Melbourne publisher David S. Miller and his wife, who lived up the road. While in desperate need for some serious love and care, it had "amazing bones" and they knew something incredible could be done with it. Engaging award-winning Melbourne designer Mim Design the Millers were determined to respectfully reinstate the home to its former glory days while enhancing their lifestyle. “The Miller’s are a busy young family with a diverse range of hobbies, they needed functional spaces and communal areas, room for entertainment, privacy and storage,” Mim Design Principal Miriam Fanning says.

Vibrant yet cosy, this living room features the Controra Armchair by Ron Gilad for Molteni&C and BassamFallows CB-41 Daybed. The wall unit was custom designed by Mim and cleverly incorporates a wine rack and display shelving for books, objects and the Copycat lamp by Michael Annastassiades for Flos.

Project manager and builder Project Friday coordinated the work as Mim Design started connecting spaces, making the home light, bright and welcoming, while retaining the integrity of the mid-century features that are all too often lost. The open-plan kitchen area is flooded with natural light from clerestory glazing added to the living room ceiling while the relocated swimming pool and new pop-up dining room adds theatre and activity.

“The abundance of natural light changes the home’s dynamic, making rooms more inviting while highlighting aspects and features such as a view, artwork, panelling or joinery,” Miriam says. Several original features were retained and restored in appreciation for their beauty and highly prized vintage qualities.

Natural white and muted grey tones are met with contrasting walnut and deluxe finishes such as stone benchtops and 100% wood carpets. Character details such as the crazy-pave travertine floors were redone by skilled craftsman, while new fittings and fixtures pay homage to the mid-century era while complementing the original features.

Spanish Design Tour | GANDIA BLASCO

Last week I kicked off my Spanish Design Series, highlighting some of the incredible places we visited during the Sunny Design Days Tour in Spain. Today I'm going to share our visit to Gandia Blasco, a design company located in the beautiful town of Ontinyent in the province of Valencia. Founded as a family business in 1941, Gandia Blasco first specialised in the production of blankets. In the late 80s, company president José A. Gandía-Blasco reinvented the business, developing new lines of home textiles and rugs under the name GAN. A change of course in 2000 saw the introduction of outdoor furniture and along with it, further success. Now recognised as a global leader in outdoor furniture, Gandia Blasco have opened shops and showrooms in a number of countries worldwide. Staying true to their beginnings, the indoor textile brand GAN remains an important part of the catalogue.

Arriving at the stunning location we were treated to a delicious Mediterranean breakfast in La Casa Gandia Blasco courtyard, followed by a dip in the pool. Needless to say it was a great start to a day that would reach a soaring temperature of over 40°C!

Next to the pool is a huge courtyard area which showcases the Gandia Blasco outdoor furniture collections and here we got to experience some of the new products for 2017. Shown below, the understated and comfortable Saler Soft and Saler Soft Teak collections are designed by José A. Gandía-Blasco. Blau features a subtle and elegant collection of outdoor furniture with a marked architectural character and timeless quality. Designed by architectural studio Fran Silvestre, the collection includes chairs, sofas, stools, loungers, foot rests, tables and a tree-like lamp, all of which share the same light and fluid forms.

José A. very kindly gave us a tour of his exquisite home, La Casa Gandia Blasco. A true extension of the brand and a lesson in pared back styling, the white washed interior features incredible concrete staircases and huge windows overlooking the gorgeous courtyard.

Another highlight of this visit was checking out the new Garden Layers collection designed by famed architect and designer Patricia Urquiola. The first outdoor series under the framework of GAN, the incredible collection is made up of rugs, mats, roll pillows and cushions. These can be arranged together in different ways, providing infinite possibilities for outdoor living.

The inspiration for the collection came from on a trip to India where Patricia Urquiola was captivated by the delicacy and harmony of the Mughal architecture she discovered there. Gardens and terraces found their way into her restless imagination, igniting the first sparks of creativity for the outdoor collection.

An expert at interpreting other worlds and transporting us to them through her exquisite language, Urquiola once again showcases her masterly design skills. The influence of the Orient is evident in Garden Layers by the way it invites reclined relaxation on rugs and mats, with the addition of roll pillows and cushions. It can also be perceived in the fringes, the finishes and the geometry patterned textiles. Having the pleasure of testing out the collection, I can honestly say the comfort levels were exceptional. The roll pillows are so supportive, I could have stayed there for hours. The warm colourways, patterning and textural elements of the products make them even more appealing.

The collection is available in three colour groups; terracotta, grey and blue. Made with high-tech materials and fillings including weather resistant yarns and foams that dry rapidly, they are perfect for outdoors. To see the full collection take a look here

Urbanears Connected Speakers

I first discovered Swedish audio brand Urbanears a few years ago when looking for headphones. Their pared pack design was a breath of fresh air and over time I bought several pairs in a range of colours, so that everyone in the family was sorted! Recently Urbanears got in touch asking if I'd like to collaborate on their new range of Connected Speakers and I didn't hesitate. Having seen the campaign directed by Lotta Agaton, (the film is a must-see), I thought they looked amazing and I couldn't wait to test one out.

Available in two sizes - both named after Swedish neighbourhoods, Stammen and Baggen - the speakers offer an advanced Wi-Fi and multi-room audio experience. What's more, they are easy to use and fit seamlessly into your desired interior scheme. With the clean, pared back aesthetic that Urbanears is known for, the speakers are wrapped in acoustically transparent fabric and come in six gorgeous colours, ranging from the subdued Vinyl Black and Concrete Grey to fun brights like Dirty Pink and Plant Green.

I ended up going with the Concrete Grey because it's a great fit for our neutral-schemed interior. While our open plan living area could definitely handle the bigger size speaker, I decided on the smaller version, Stammen. Perfect for our String shelves, its compact form means it will also transition well to smaller areas like our downstairs living room and our bedroom. We could also look at getting another speaker in the future, as they are designed to work alone or together. I love the idea of combining two or more speakers to form a multi-room audio system, or setting a different mood for each room.

Packed with advanced wi-fi technology, Urbanears Connected Speakers give you the freedom to play your favourite music from a variety of different sources via Bluetooth or by hooking up the aux cord. To get started, I downloaded the Urbanears Connnected App on my phone and simply preset 7 of my favourite radio stations. Next up I'm going to add in some of my favourite Spotify speaker playlists. The app also allows you to tweak the equaliser to perfection. By simply twisting the speaker knob you can adjust the volume and change from one preset to another. Currently placed on the corner of our String shelves, this is an ideal location, being right in the middle of our open-plan space. Whether we're chilling in the living room, gathered in the kitchen or eating at the dining table, the speaker provides an awesome sound. How did we ever live without it?

Sydney-based designer furniture and homewares company Urban Couture have launched a luxury bed linen range, The Everything Set. Designed by Urban Couture co-founder Katriarna Rodgers, and made from 100% stone washed French Flax Linen, the idea came from a desire to simplify the process of buying bed linen. An often daunting task involving the choosing of separates and deciding on colour combinations, Kat wanted to design a set that has everything you need to create a beautifully styled bed. Each set includes a reversible duvet cover, flat sheet, fitted sheet and four pillow cases (two in each colour way).

Agave Green/Pebble Grey

Monochrome Stripes/Black Caviar

Peony/Rose Pink

More than three years on from my first feature and interview with founders Kat & Thomas, I had the pleasure of finally meeting the lovely couple recently at Denfair. The beautiful Urban Couture stand included a preview of the new linen alongside their carefully curated range of furniture, lighting and homewares.

The Everything Set collection features stunning colour ways ranging from classic white and monochrome (I love the stripes) through to soft hues, including two of my favourite pairings Agave Green with Pebble Grey and Peony with Rose Pink. The reversible duvet cover is a great feature, allowing you to easily change the look.

Avenue Design Studio | Project Kralingen

Today I'm sharing a new project by Avenue Design Studio, a creative studio based in The Netherlands run by Holly Marder and Hedda Pier. I've been following Holly's award-winning blog Avenue Lifestyle for several years and have always loved seeing the 'before and after's' of the inspiring interiors she designs for private clients. Her style is unpretentious and has a light, almost ethereal quality to it that always brings a sense of calm. Hedda, an interior designer with a passion for architecture and building joined Holly as partner in January this year. Their latest interior design reveal, Project Kralingen, is a beautiful contemporary home in an up-and-coming neighbourhood in Rotterdam.

The owners, a young couple - one of whom is architect Stefan Prins, spent the last three years designing and building their dream 'green' home before enlisting the talented duo to help with the interior design. Highlighting the architectural elements, clean lines and overall light and flow created, Holly and Hedda kept the palette very neutral and introduced warm and cosy textures. One of my favourite areas is the living room which features a magnificent six metre high wall flanking a large glass facade. The two large pieces of art commissioned by multi-disciplinary artist July Adrichem provide a striking yet subtle feature.

I also love the walnut cabinet unit. Custom-designed to separate the living and dining area, it cleverly provides storage for both rooms. The fresh Nordic style continues through to the airy kitchen, which features a mix of beautiful, functional furnishings and accessories chosen to soften the space while adding character and warmth.

New Season Styling with H&M Home

It wasn't easy returning from the height of summer in Spain to our dark and dreary winter. But when it comes to interiors, the one thing I do like about the cooler seasons is the introduction of cosy textures and warmer colours. When I came across the new H&M Home imagery for Autumn 2017, I was immediately drawn to the warm beige, caramel and brown tones. They have been making their way into our home this year in the form of paint, art, textiles and ceramics and as shown below, they work really well with warm wood, rattan and raw concrete furniture and lighting. H&M Home offer some great homeware pieces at affordable prices to help you create the look.

During 3daysofdesign I had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Skagerak Flagship Store in Copenhagen. A family-owned company with historical roots in Scandinavian geography and proud furniture traditions, Skagerak create timeless, sustainable products for the home. While the company has developed into a modern design brand, the founding elements including a passion for wood and focus on quality have remained at the forefront. Collaborating with established designers as well as emerging talents, Skagerak produce an extensive selection of contemporary products. Sitting side by side with the classics, they are designed to last, to age well and to accumulate stories.  While I have been admiring Skagerak products for some time, it's been mostly on the web. Seeing them in real life, I could really appreciate the high level of craftsmanship, warm aesthetic beauty and functionality of the products. Every corner of the stunning store was beautifully styled and I came away feeling so inspired, and with lots of photos. I've finally been through them all and picked out a few to share with you today.

Wyers Bar & Restaurant in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has welcomed a new culinary destination, Wyers Bar & Restaurant. Designed by Studio Modijefsky, the interior features a rich colour palette of olive green, elephant grey, clay coloured brown and warm ochre. The walls and furniture shift gracefully from one hue to another and are enriched by finishes of brass, leather, timber and marble. A series of mysterious portraits commissioned especially for the project by Dutch photographer Maarten Schröder create a striking accent that is clearly visible from the street.

The all-day restaurant and accompanying petite coffee corner Miss Louisa is part of a completely renovated hotel that was formerly occupied by a Dutch fabric firm called 'Firma Wyers'. The design of the beautiful, cosy banquettes is a nod to the history of the site. Resembling fabric rolls in various colours with delicate details, they represent the variety of fabrics that would have been on display in the shop many years ago.

Another reference to the site's heritage is the use of metal tubes which linger through the space like a thread weaving through a piece of fabric alongside the wall. Growing from the sculptural wooden banquettes, these spatial lines make playful curves and turn into a light tube before disappearing again into one of the walls between the windows

Photography by Maarten Willemstein

Further details inspired by the building's rich history include the dark wooden floor laid in a woven, herringbone pattern and the Wyers logo made of steel with a sewing pin marking.

Fully renovated, this delightful 18th century apartment in Stockholm has been impeccably styled by Josefin Hååg for Fantastic Frank. The small, multi-tasking room below incorporates so many lovely elements, including some of my favourite lamps, yet none are competing for attention. Beautifully balanced, it features a warm neutral palette, gorgeous workspace furniture and wonderful picture wall. The built in shelving is ideal for the compact room, while the deep windows and high ceilings increase the sense of space.

Clean lines and pared-back styling carries through to the kitchen and dining space with warm wood, marble and a touch of brass.

Since launching in 2007, fashion brand COS have opened stores worldwide in carefully considered locations, applying an architectural design concept that preserves buildings’ original features whilst creating a modern, welcoming space. While the renovations of their Østergade, Copenhagen store are underway, COS have opened up a temporary pop-up space across the road at 36 Østergade. Presenting a curated edit of their AW17 collection, the minimalist interior features clean lines, beautiful furniture from HAY and a warm grey palette. I particularly love the extended lounge and library area shown below, with rows of shelving and and two toned walls. I can't wait to see what the refreshed store looks like next time I visit Copenhagen!

A look at the latest work of Laura Seppänen today, this apartment is one of three she has decorated for Lumo Homes, a housing company in Finland. I love the way Laura breathes life into brand new homes by layering different materials and adding homely touches. By playing with different lighting options including a mix of table lamps, floor lamps and pendant lighting, she has created areas within the open plan space that are cosy, perfect for reading and relaxing. Sticking with her signature monochrome palette, Laura has added a hint of blue and warm accents in light wood and brass. Large area rugs from Adora provide cosiness and comfort underfoot, while green plants bring a little of the outside in.

Furnishings includes classical Finnish design as well as newer Nordic design pieces such as the Black Snaregade dining table by Menu, the hero piece of the room. The beautiful leather chairs  are designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro and the sofa and side tables are by Finnish furniture brand Interface.

News from Lindebjerg Design

After having her own interior shop for many years, Copenhagen-based Mona Henriksen's lifelong fascination with furniture led her to launch Lindebjerg Design in 2011. Designing and building furniture with clean lines and a simple, Nordic expression, the pieces are now sold in design stores across most of Europe. Mona says that while furniture serves a practical purpose such as storing something, they can also affect the entire mood of a room by the way they look. I couldn't agree more. Designed to last for generations, the furniture is made from natural materials such as pine and oak.  Here's a look at some of the most recent releases.

Expanding their furniture collection with three new tables made from solid oak, their strong form is softened with a curved-edge table top, resulting in a light and elegant aesthetic. The three sizes offer versatile options including a low-level bench, coffee table and console. I really the love the narrow, elongated design. See the full T1 series here

As a soft embrace, the Dark Oak series from Lindebjerg Design creates a beautiful frame around the content of the cabinet. The stained black cabinets show the magnificent structure of the wood and soften the minimalistic design expression.

The N4 Cabinet embraces the growing trend towards compact living which is especially popular in big cities. With a depth of only 25 cm and a width of 70 cm, the cabinet can be hung most places without taking up any floor space.

Perfect for those who love acquiring and displaying ceramics and stoneware, the N1 Cabinet is for the collector. Like putting a stunning piece of art in a frame, the cabinet provides a beautiful way of displaying favourite objects such as tableware, art pieces and other collectables.

I've featured the work of Swedish interior designer Louise Liljencrantz before - you may remember this recent project. I'm in awe of the elegant spaces she creates, so when her stunning home started appearing on the web a while ago I knew I'd have to share it with you. The classic home's architectural detailing including herringbone flooring, high ceilings and large windows have been enhanced by a neutral palette of soft greys, together with dark wood. Luxurious soft furnishings add further texture, and an enviable collection of furniture, lighting and artwork graces every room. A truly exquisite home!

Launching with duvets, sheets and pillow cases, the collection will gradually evolve to include new products, colours and patterns. I love seeing stylist and designer Annaleena Leino-Karlsson's new home build when it pops up on my Instagram feed so discovering it featured in full over on Residence magazine today has been a special treat. Located in Ekerö, outside of Stockholm, the spacious and airy contemporary home reflects Annaleena's signature style which is clean, elegant and always inspiring. Painted in a soft grey, the interior features carefully-curated objects, lighting and furniture. These include Annaleena's own designs and pieces from her beautiful new studio, also located in Ekerö.

This week Danish brand ferm LIVING opened the doors to their brand new showroom 'The Home' in the centre Copenhagen. Showcasing their new AW17 collection, the pieces are an exploration of volumes, geometry, graphical elements, and a touch of the Nordic decadence. Let's take a look.

A few of my favourite picks include the Borders Kelim Rugs which feature beautiful burnt hues, the velour Poufs which come in three different geometrical shapes in various colours and the uniquely versatile Unfold Room Divider. The new collection features updated designs to the Collect Lighting Series, including the introduction of some enticing new colours and a range of beautiful opal shades in three round shapes.

The collection offers many gorgeous new accessories which make it hard to pick, but I especially love the sweet pink Spin Jars and the new Sekki range of plant pots and tableware. Rediscovering the magic of traditional manufacturing, the Sekki range is made of clay, showcasing a remarkable, coarse texture and rich, earthy colours. The popular Plant Box range sees the addition of a smaller model, ideal for storage on the kitchen counter, where you want to keep chopping boards and ingredients within reach. I also love the new Drupe Mill, designed for freshly ground spices, salt or pepper, they are made of ash wood and come in six divine colours.

Penney + Bennett | Guardian Collection + Sleepwear

I am incredibly excited to be kicking off the new week with a recent shoot I did with Penney + Bennett. Since launching in 2014, the NZ-based homeware brand has gone from strength to strength and this year is proving to be the biggest yet for founders Loren Marks and Sarah Carson. The immensely talented and hard-working duo have not only released their third collection Guardian, they are now producing their own range of fabrics and are getting ready to launch their debut Pyjama Collection later this week. One of my favourite brands to work with, I am always blown away by their unique and beautiful products which are crafted by hand in New Zealand. Using only the highest quality natural cloth sourced internationally, these form the base for experimental prints consisting of a range of traditional painting, drawing, photography and digital techniques. The Guardian Collection comprises luxurious natural linen cushions, GOTS certified organic cotton bedding and gorgeous gold gilded art prints.

Organic Cotton Zinc Bed Cover, Sheets and Pillowslips, Guardian Linen Pillowslips, Cascades II Small Linen Cushion, Sophora Print and Raven Lounge Robe

Discussing the inspiration behind the Guardian collection, Loren says “The aesthetic elements of Guardian were collected during our long tramps in national parks throughout New Zealand. Guardian embodies the perfect imperfection of the natural world and highlights the subtleties in tones, textures, colours and shapes found in these ethereal locations. We wanted Guardian to celebrate the contemplative, meditative qualities surrounding these places that have been enjoyed by generations for centuries. According to ancient myth, the Guardians are the fauna that protect the laws of the forest.”

The theme of the collection lends itself beautifully to the bedroom with pieces that be combined in many different ways to create a relaxing haven.

Organic Cotton Zinc Bed Cover, Sheets and Pillowslips, Agathis Linen Pillowslip, Agathis Large Linen Cushion, Zinc Sleep Shirt, Zinc Pocket Pant, Raven Lounge Robe and Black Slippers

Organic Cotton Olive Bed Cover, Sheets, Pillowslips and Cushion, Zinc Pillowslip, Sophora Linen Pillowslip, Sophora Large Linen Cushion, Cascades II Print, Zinc Lounge Robe and Black Slippers

With the exciting expansion into the production of fabrics, Sarah says “It has always been a dream of ours to expand our range into fabrics so our customer can customise any of our designs their own way. We have always wanted to do a collection based on New Zealand, we take a lot of inspiration from nature and the environment around us. We are now exporting internationally so it is exciting to be able to show our New Zealand perspective. We have taken a different direction whilst maintaining the same principles and voice as our previous collections.”

Organic Cotton Zinc Bed Cover, Sheets, Pillowslips and Cushion, Guardian Linen Pillowslip, Ara I Linen Pillowslip, Ara 1 Large Linen Cushion, Raven Lounge Robe

Organic Cotton Zinc Bed Cover, Sheets, Pillowslips and Cushion, Rau Linen Pillowslip, Ara I Linen Pillowslip, Ara 1 Large Linen Cushion, Raven Lounge Robe

Penney + Bennett's latest move into Pyjamas has been a natural progression. Noticing it was difficult to find beautiful sleepwear made from quality natural fabrics in modern silhouettes, Loren and Sarah decided to take matters into their own hands. Applying their knowledge and thoughtful approach, they have created a sleepwear collection with relaxed tailoring to ensure these can effortlessly transition from sleepwear to daywear.

Made in New Zealand, the range consists of long and short sleeve sleep shirts with drawstring pocket shorts and long pants, all available in a luxurious organic cotton twill or textured linen. The sleep shirts feature a boyfriend style button-up shirt with twin stitching, a generous side split, extra length at the back and a pleated yoke to ensure a flattering fit and unrestricted movement. Both the pocket short and pant have been perfectly designed for lounging. With an elasticated waistband and side pockets, they can be worn high or low.

Available in short and full length, the robe is a Japanese style tie up robe in a luxurious organic cotton twill. Featuring wide sleeves, invisible side pockets and a loop for hanging, these can be worn undone for an easy extra layer.

Dreaming of warmer weather, new projects and an ongoing love affair with beige. That pretty much sums up today's moodboard. I'm recovering from another round of winter bugs, but I'm not surprised given the crazy few months I've had. The good thing is, it has forced me to slow down and catch my breath. I've turned a corner this week and I feel really excited about what's to come on the blog and home front. In keeping with the neutral theme, visit my recently updated Shop page for some more things I'm currently loving. Roll on summer!
