Aura Autumn 2015 Collection | New Arrivals + Giveaway

Feeling hot and sticky in the sweltering summer heat did nothing to restrain my excitement when I received a sneak preview of the AURA Autumn 2015 range recently. Founder and creative director Tracie Ellis says that while the cooler months become a time to gravitate towards darker and more neutral shades, it's the most vibrant and exuberant colours that make up the new season's most complimentary companions. I'm delighted to share the first arrivals with you today!

The result of a daring experiment in angles, colour and form, Cinq is a bold graphic design in a gorgeous palette that combines black and grey with demure tones of honeydew, pink and marshmallow. I predict this one will fly out the door!

Another striking geometric design, the Kami is timeless in monochrome. I love that it's also reversible, with black on one side and white on the back (as shown below). This simple styling and relaxed vibe is my kind of perfect!

The vibrant AURA towel collection for Autumn 2015 has also arrived, and features a fun mix of neon lime and orange poppy alongside blazing flashes of fiery coral.

Homestyle | New Issue + Subscription Giveaway

Usually reserved for when the kids go to bed to avoid any interruptions, Homestyle is a magazine I will read cover to cover in one sitting. Too hard to put down, the latest issue is no exception. Filled with fresh ideas and inspiring homes, I found myself lingering a little longer over one particular residence. Located in Sydney's sought after Surry Hills, it is the gorgeous home of Leah and Darius Taylor, owners of The Minimalist, a design store many of you will no doubt be familiar with. Originally a single-storey stable for the adjoining terrace houses, the couple have transformed the space into a stylish four story abode, with the store on the ground level and their living spaces in the three storeys above. While Leah's eye for design, minimal style and love of black and white is evident throughout, she also happens to have a background in interior design, which no doubt was a huge help throughout the renovation process.

Photography by Felix Forest / Living Inside and Styling and writing by Tahnee Carroll

Despite Leah saying it will probably always be a work in progress, the results so far speak for themselves. I'm sure like me, you will slow down to take in every little detail of this unique and striking home. Pick up a copy of the February/March 2015 Homestyle to read the full story.

Homestyle are also kindly giving away a free subscription to one lucky reader!

Open to both NZ and Australian residents, the winner will receive a 12 month subscription to Homestyle (six issues). To enter simply email enter@thedesignchaser.com with HOMESTYLE in the subject line, and let me know your full name. The competition will close on Wednesday 11th February at 8am NZ time (UTC +12). The winner will be chosen by random.org and announced on both the blog and Facebook page that day.

Union Atelier | Sculptor Barber

Union Atelier is a design studio based in Taiwan. Working across a broad range of design projects including branding, products, graphic design and visual merchandising, it was one of their interior projects that recently caught my eye. While there are a few clues pointing in the direction of it being a hair salon, the huge space and table area left me wondering. After getting in touch with the designers, I discovered the idea behind the concept. A collaboration between Union Atelier and a Taiwanese contemporary artist Chou Shih Hsiung, Sculptor Barber in fact comprises a barber service, contemporary art works, furniture and home accessories.

Wanting to create a unique space with a modern aesthetic and masculine edge, Union Atelier have hit the mark. I love the white and bright open plan design, oversized plants and statement lighting. The neon wall art which adds a playful touch, while dark wood and leather adds further warmth and texture. I'd happily have my hair attended to in a place like this!

Lighting News

I'm up very early this morning to share some finds with you before we head away for the night. With it still being dark outside these new lighting brands and products seem especially fitting.  Starting with HIMMEE, the new Finnish lighting brand by Designer Timo Niskanen, the products evoke a Scandinavian feel which immediately appeals. With a goal to produce high quality lighting for lovers of design, the LENTO Pendant Family is a great example. I love the classic range of shapes and monochrome finish.

The FILLY Long Neck Floor Lamp is another favourite. Its simple design, clean lines and mix of black aluminium, solid oak and concrete are spot on. I would love this for our living room!

Styling and photography by Susanna Vento for Varpunen

Unplugged is a beautiful new collection of candle and tea light holders by Nordic lighting company Northern Lighting. Created to provide mood-enhancing alternatives to electric lighting, the range covers everything from stylishly small tea lights to larger, multi- functional designs. I'm always on the lookout for new ideas for candle holders, and these fit the bill perfectly.

Images styled by Per Olav Sølvberg and photographed by Kristofer Johnsson

I'm also loving these new releases by Copenhagen design studio New Works. Working with a range of designers, the pieces have been created with a mix of materials including toned glass, concrete, steel and copper. Currently exhibiting at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of these beautiful designs around the web soon!

Interior Styling | Bedroom Seating

Back when we were finishing our home build, I talked about wanting to install a bench seat upstairs. The space alongside the big windows in our open-plan living area is calling for it. My vision is for a very simple custom-made wood or even concrete bench, while my husband likes the idea of a built-in with storage. We even had the dining table top custom made in a narrow size to allow for it. Until that idea comes to fruition, I've decided that a freestanding bench seat is the way to go. That way I can move it around for styling proposes, and I have always loved the idea of having a bench seat or occasional chair in the bedroom. If you have limited space like us, a narrow bench seat is the best option, but a chair provides a nice finishing touch. Not just for sitting on, bedroom seating is handy for draping clothes on or displaying nice things. They also make good side tables! Here's some recent inspiration.

Jane Denton | New Series + Worldwide Giveaway

I've been a big fan New Zealand designer Jane Denton for several years, having first interviewed her on the blog back in 2013. Creating unique textile art that is lively and fresh but also timeless, Jane is making a name for herself not only here in NZ, but around the world. Her work has been featured on many top global blogs, and can be seen in the homes of leading designers such as US stylist Emily Henderson.

Using wool or cotton stitched onto canvas, Jane says "I really love creating something beautiful and bringing a little bit of happiness to people's homes." As a proud owner of two Jane Denton artworks, I can say that they've brought an enormous amount of happiness into ours!

Working hard at her craft over Summer, Jane has just released a stunning new series, and I'm delighted to share it with you today. The five new artworks bring with them all the texture and delicacy of previous ones, but with a more sophisticated and refined look. Achieved by using cotton rather than wool, and some very subtle metallic threads stitched over some of the lighter colours, the pieces are exquisite. I love the softer palettes which have hints of silver and gold, the boldness of the blues tones and of course the large black on white piece is incredibly striking.

The series was shot at the beautiful LET LIV store in Wellington, styled alongside their gorgeous Scandi-inspired homewares and furniture. All of the artworks are limited editions (usually 10-20 editions available for each design), and have been hand-stitched by Jane. Available to purchase online with worldwide shipping, framing is an option for customers in NZ and the US. The new series is also available to purchase from the LET LIV store, in a choice of white or timber frames.  The Trestle Desk below is by Company

Jane also does commissions, and has recently worked on larger scale pieces for some overseas clients.

To celebrate the new launch, Jane has offered to give away a stunning Arrows Artwork to one very lucky reader! The artwork is valued at $485 NZD and is unframed.

To enter, email enter@thedesignchaser.com with Jane Denton Arrows in the subject line. Please include your full name in the email. To be eligible you must also follow Jane Denton on Instgram (@janedenton_art).

The competition is open worldwide, and will close on Tuesday 17th February at 10am NZ time (UTC +12). The winner will be chosen via random.org, notified by email and announced on the blog that day.

Best of luck!

Citta Design | Winter 2015 Preview

Attending the Citta Design Winter 2015 launch yesterday, deco deco - inspired by the city of Paris - left me buzzing with excitement. Located inside a Silo at Wynyard Quarter, the concrete interior made a striking backdrop for the new collection. Refined and elegant the luxe textures are enlivened with a signature floral, embellishments inspired by beading, and touches of platinum metallics. The delicious palette pulls together black, charcoal and limestone white, with accents of mustard and larkspur, lilac, rose and caper.

I really love the textile products which feature gorgeous graphic cushions, bold geometric bedlinen and striking wool rugs. The beautiful timber furniture and matte powder-coated lighting will appeal to anyone who appreciates clean, contemporary design. Then there are the clever new Lean-to Bedhead/Hanging Racks, which are available in two designs, one rounded and one square. So taken with their clean lines and versatility, I've been studying the catalogue to see all of the fun ways of styling them!

Newcomers to the Citta Design team include fashion designer Julia Fong, who has created a chic capsule collection, and furniture designer David Moreland. who has created a beautiful edit of furniture and lighting pieces for the collection.

Look out for the new collection arriving online and in stores soon.

Studio You Me | Revisited

I first introduced you the Melbourne-based design firm Studio You Me back in 2013. Founded by Kestie Lane and Hana Hakim, the talented pair work across a broad range of projects, with an impressive portfolio that extends beyond interior design to graphic, event, urban, furniture and product design. The studio's ethical philosophy eschews the mass-produced for the custom crafted, and this shows through in their beautiful work. I love their fresh approach and heavy use of monochrome layered with alluring textural elements.

In today's 'revisited' post I'm going to show you a couple of recent projects by Studio You Me, starting with the incredible Artedomus showroom in Richmond. A collaboration with Thomas Coward, the dramatic transformation has given the showroom a serene, gallery like feel. Made up of curated zones centred around Italian bathware company Agape, it features Japanese ceramics, European porcelain and exclusive stones.

Due for completion early next year, Maple residential apartments in Hawthorn are very Scandinavian in style. I love the interior mix of white, pale wood and marble. Black accents including lights and tapware are very much in fitting with the gorgeous Studio Me aesthetic. I look forward to seeing these come to fruition.

Instagram | Ideas + Inspiration

Setting out to curate this month's Instagram post, where I pick out some of my favourite photos, I started to think about how much my work on this social media site as evolved. In the scheme of things, I joined up pretty late in the game, but it was the right time for me. Instagram has always been about sharing my styling work, usually at home which in a way doubles as my 'studio'. While I do occasionally share my blog posts on IG, I find Facebook to the best platform for that, and I prefer sharing my own photos, rather that the work of others. I almost always use my camera now which I love, and I much prefer editing in Photoshop than using iPhone apps. Filters are now a thing of the past!

In terms of followers, I was very excited (and a little stunned) to have passed the 50k mark this week. Instagram plays a huge role in the work I do, and looking back over my photos from the last month I found it really hard narrowing down the selection. Because I get asked so many questions I've got into a habit of tagging the brands and stores featured. This includes those I'm currently collaborating with, or just the products I'm loving right now. To see these over on IG (when they are not included in the caption), just tap on the  image

I hope you all have a lovely weekend, and don't forget to enter this week's Jane Denton Worldwide Artwork Giveaway - it's a beauty!

Small Storage Ideas

I've just wrapped up another issue of BNZ GoodHome, which includes a post on decluttering, organisation and storage. A great way to kick off the year, I'm looking forward to sharing it with you once it goes live, because there are some excellent tips and a cool DIY idea. The focus is on shelving units, because in terms of storage and decorative displays I believe they are a great solution. I also love smaller storage ideas, such as stylish containers and boxes. When it comes to magazines, office 'stuff' and kids toys, I never seem to have enough! I also also recommend utilising unused wall space, especially when space is tight. Hooks are not only functional, they provide a fun design element in the home. Also look out for smaller furniture pieces that double as storage. The clever Botanic Storage by Kristina Dam is a brilliant example. Designed as a low storage desk, you can place plants inside or on the top, while the space inside also allows for magazines, accessories or even shoes!

Another design by Kristina Dam, I love that the Magazine Keeper comes with a marble top to place your cup of coffee!

A recent discovery, Loop Design was founded by Elisheve Manekin, an industrial designer living in Israel. Creating timeless, unique home accessories that combine natural materials with thoughtful and functional design, I love the Felt Storage Bins. Perfect for keeping clutter at bay, I find the look of felt really appealing. Not only that, it is very strong and durable, and we all know how heavy piles of magazines can be. A unique feature is that the bins come with wooden handles in different colours to suit your decor. They can also be folded flat to store away when not in use.

Fresh and functional, the Loop Design Wall Hooks come with coloured tips to mix and match.

Vera Novis is a collaboration between Formbruket and SSM designers Sara Rudenstam and Hillevi Magnell. Working with simple Scandinavian forms and natural materials, including leather and wood, these clever designs are locally produced in Småland, Sweden.

Bringing organisation to life, NakNak creates simple, functional and beautiful objects for different spaces by connecting international designers and an established, family-owned metal manufacturer in Taiwan. THE BOX designed by by Yenwen Tseng is made from perforated sheet metal, giving it an airy appearance, while handles on both sides give it the mobility to move around.

Some more small storage ideas by NakNak include BEAM, a simple metal shelf with a hidden space, SHELF, which combines a mirror with a shelf, and the Q-HOOK by one of my favourite designers Afteroom.

A reminder before I go... today is the last day to enter the Jane Denton WORLDWIDE GIVEAWAY. Don't miss out!

Paper Plane x Jo Wade | Art Print Series

Continually keeping us on our toes with exciting design news, Paper Plane have recently launched their first exclusive collaboration. Passionate about providing a platform for emerging creatives and young brands, this marks the start of an exciting exploration with like-minded designers. To kick things off, they have teamed up with their very own in-house graphic designer Jo Wade. As their first staff member, Jo has played a monumental role in the early development of Paper Plane, making her the perfect candidate. Using her sharp eye for design and consumer trends, Jo has created a stunning art print series with metallic foiled typography on watercolour.

Each print abstractly evokes the corresponding typewritten states of being that we all relate to so well at various stages in life - Stay Wild, Love, and Beautiful Chaos. A fun sentiment that gets you thinking about which one to choose, the prints would also look amazing styled as a set of three. Seen here for the first time, I love this fun and striking imagery created by the Paper Plane team.

The prints are available exclusively from Paper Plane and can be purchased unframed (with worldwide shipping) or framed (NZ only).

A quick announcement before I go - congratulations to the winner of the Jane Denton Giveaway, Diana Thompson and thanks to all who entered!

I first introduced you to the extraordinarily talented Danish photographer Heidi Lerkenfeldt back in 2013. Working predominantly in interiors, her inspiring portfolio blew me away. Featuring more of her work in this post, you will see there is a theme of understated, beautifully elegant spaces, captured with extreme clarity and attention to detail. Today's update brings with it a fresh dose of eye candy from some of Heidi's most recent projects. Once again wowed by the incredible interior elements that include original architectural features and herringbone flooring, the furniture, artworks, lighting and rugs are also sublime. It's little wonder I keep returning for more!

If you follow me on IG will have no doubt heard me singing the praises of Greenleaf Organics. Launched last year, it is the brainchild of Aucklander Sarah Tanner, a creative force who is passionate about organic whole foods and providing optimum nutrition for her and her family. Transforming this enthusiasm into an amazing new service, Greenleaf Organics deliver organic, superfood smoothies and handmade superfoods right to your work, home or event.

Now you may be thinking that being a food product, this is a little left-field for TDC, but in actual fact, when Sarah approached me to become a GLO Ambassador I didn't think twice. As an active, busy Mum who has always had a keen interest in nutrition, I couldn't wait to share my love of Greenleaf Organics with others. I'm also a big believer in positivity and gaining knowledge from those who inspire you and I know that Sarah is on the exact same wavelength. For two years prior to launching Greenleaf Organics, she used her blog STIL as a platform for sharing her ideas, spending many hours researching and learning the best foods, ingredients and keys to success for a happy, healthy family. Building a community of like-minded people, Sarah has had an amazing response to her new venture, from loyal followers and new customers alike.

With new products launching regularly, my family and I are thoroughly enjoying the taste-testing! We're also feeling the incredible benefits of the nourishing ingredients that include minerals, essential fats, fibre, antioxidants, and phytochemicals and vitamins. All this, and you don't have to prep anything, they are delivered right to your door and the packaging is divine!

Whether you’re a two year old superhero, a teen year old superstar, a wellness seeker, a nutritional neglector, a weekend warrior, an over-worker, a high-performance parent, a world saver, or just a really busy person...Greenleaf Organics has something to nourish you from skin to soul.

Elisabeth Heltoft | Refined Eclecticism

My personal style is of the pared-back kind, but if I ever were to lean towards a more eclectic aesthetic, this is how I'd do it. Here inside the Copenhagen home of Photographer Elisabeth Heltoft, the vibe is one of relaxed playfulness, yet it still has a refined edge. Bright and white with black accents, hits of colour and indoor plants, the lines are clean with a perfect mix of designer pieces and vintage finds. As for the art and perfect art wall composition, well that's no accident. Elisabeth is in fact the owner of Copenhagen gallery, Chi Chi Potter and has a great eye for sourcing young, fresh and affordable art.

Penney + Bennett | New Printed Linen + Art

Ever since attending their launch party last year, I have been smitten with New Zealand brand Penney + Bennett. Bursting onto the interiors scene with their incredible printed silk and organic linen collection featured in this New + Noted post, it is impossible not to be wowed by the quality and uniqueness of the designs. Founded by Loren Marks and Sarah Carson, the fine art graduates who met at college "are devoted to creating simplicity, materiality and questioning the conventional in contemporary textile living ware." Having had the pleasure of using their stunning silk products in this bedroom shoot, I leapt at the chance of styling their new range of products for today's post.

Part of the Momoyama collection, Penney + Bennett have released their exquisite designs in a luxurious, heavyweight linen. Still available in silk, the linen provides an exciting variation and new textural element. Available in two sizes, you can purchase the cushions either unfilled, or with feather inners. Knowing only too well how beautifully the designs compliment one another, it makes sense that the pillowcases are sold individually rather than as a pair, allowing for customised styling choices.

To show how well they transition from the bedroom to the living room, here's a look at some of the new linen scatter cushions on our sofa. Along with favourites the White Thatch and Black Thatch designs, the Blue Water and Grey Water work in beautifully with my recently updated picture wall.

Penney + Bennett have also launched their first range of Art Prints. Hand gilded to achieve a unique, textured effect, no two prints are exactly the same. Of course I couldn't resist including one on my wall, with the gorgeous Blue Water Print shown above. Available in two sizes unframed, custom sizes can also be made on request.

For the bedroom styling I had a lot of fun layering patterns and playing with different design combinations. The options are endless, and regardless of what you choose the textural effect is simply heavenly. I love how some of the art prints replicate the linens, and all feature pretty touches of gold.

Also available as gift cards, these make lovely keepsakes or affordable little prints for your walls, as shown below.

Currently Loving | Round Coffee Tables

I've been thinking a lot about coffee tables lately. I'd like to move our current one to the downstairs living, which means getting a new one for upstairs. I'm in no rush however, because unless I push the table out of the way the kids can't resist using it, and it ends up being more of a toy table than a coffee table.

I've always loved the idea of the Hay Tray Tables, but I keep coming back to round designs. I like the way the curves of a round table soften the square edges of the sofa and picture wall. Still hankering for the &Tradition Hoof Table that I included in this wishlist, I also love the round tables on offer at Hem that I featured here. Today I've rounded up some more covetable contenders.

Designed by architect Carl Engblom, this coffee table is seen here in the lovely home of Swedish photographer Petra Bindel, via Elle Decoration Sweden

My ultimate dream would be two nesting tables, because I love how versatile they are. Constantly moving furniture around, I would have them side by side, or use the small one as a side table in the living room or bedroom if needed. While I'll always love the classic Scandi look of white and pale wood, I also love using black accents in our home. One like this next one would work well.

Two beautiful designs to finish off, one features a handy storage container and touch of copper. The other is a showstopper in marble and was presented at the recent Stockholm Furniture Fair. You may remember The Turning Table below from this post featured in white oak. I really like the new black ash colour.

Kitzen is a new Finnish brand that offers seamless kitchen solutions. Promising to create the ideal conditions for cooking, they take into account the lifestyle of the residents as well as the home's architecture and decor. With a timeless palette of colours, materials and cabinetry to suit a variety of interior styles, I was certainly drawn to the clean lines and simple functional designs. My favourites include Living with Less, Softer Touch, Minimasculin, Urban Classic and Blogger, for which the translation reads "beautiful business... fresh pudding on a plate and a stack of your favourite magazines on the table. Happiness is the breakfast in your own kitchen and a big cup of coffee...". That made me smile. While breakfast is more of a mad rush in our household, I love the days where I work from home and am able to prepare lunch in my own custom built kitchen. These fully customisable kitchens will hopefully inspire those who are renovating or building. Or they may simply give you the motivation to update or declutter your current cooking space.

Mini Grandi Artist

Showcasing two beautiful artworks by new design studio mini Grandi Artist, today's post involves a very special collaboration. Founder Sophie Melville is a talented painter and graphic designer who I have known since school days here in Auckland. Naturally creative and passionate about art, Sophie graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts in New Zealand with a Fine arts degree specialising in Painting. Now living in the picturesque town of Wanaka with her husband and two small children, surrounded by the lake and mountains, Sophie says she is grateful everyday to live in such a beautiful part of the world. Experimenting with artwork and textures in her studio, the beautiful pieces for mini Grandi Artist (little grown up artist) are inspired not only by nature but also her children, and their small yet precious everyday moments.

Sophie very kindly sent me two of her original works to style. Silver Leaf features painted and scratched leaf forms and has been designed with Scandi-style simplicity in mind, and  Silver Moon is perfect for little 'grown up' children's rooms and features a painted and scratched moon with a watercolour background and hand drawn stars.

My first thought was that a beautiful little girl’s room would be fitting for these gorgeous artworks, and luckily I had the perfect space in mind. Thanks to my cousin and very close friend Victoria Halford of Scout and Deliver, I had the pleasure of using her one year-old daughter Darci's room, along with an array of gorgeous things to use as styling props. Of course it helps that Vic is a product scout with a passion for styling kids rooms. A love of interiors definitely runs in the family!

After admiring the first SATO show apartment styled by Helsinki-based interior stylist Susanna Vento earlier this week (and seen here in my Round Coffee Table post), I was hoping there would be more to come. My prayers were answered this morning when I discovered a second one completed. I've long been a fan of Susanna's distinctively clean, pared-back style and I love how she has added warmth to the simple spaces with interesting textures, in particular the incredible custom-made bronze mirror, artworks, rugs and plants. Her as always beautiful selection of furniture includes the Knot Chairs and Tablo Table by Normann Copenhagen, and Taru sofa by Junet.

BNZ GoodHome | DIY Shelving Unit

$

The latest issue of BNZ GoodHome has just been published, so I can now tell you more about my decluttering post I mentioned here. With a focus on organisation and storage we wanted to create another DIY solution - you may remember the Christmas Trestle Table from last year - but this time with an upcycling twist. While I had input into the overall design, including colours and materials, credit must go to our superstar builder John Cockswho started with an old chest of drawers picked up off the side of the road in an inorganic collection. Now a fantastic shelving unit, I'm sure you'll agree it's a pretty remarkable transformation. To see the before photos, as well as a list of materials and step by step instructions, take a look here.

A mix of natural and white-painted plywood, the unit has a simple, clean, streamlined look that I love. It's also highly functional, providing the enclosed space at the bottom for storing items, and open shelving to display those things that you love. To complete the Scandi-style look, I styled the unit with beautiful Hay accessories from Cult Design, and a few of my own items. I also wanted to incorporate some of the 2015 trends I had mentioned in another of the GoodHome articles I wrote here, such as earthy colours, natural materials, plants, marble and metallics. The Copper Flower Pot by Cooee and Louise Roe Copper Candleholder from Norsu worked perfectly. My favourite piece however is the Fade to Grey Volume lamp by Gam Fratesi for Lightyears that you may remember from this post.  Also available in Evergreen, it is from Cult Design.

Styling by Michelle Halford / photography by Alistair Guthrie

To see more images of the finished unit, and a 'where to buy' of the styling pieces used, take a look here.

In addition to the Declutter your Home post and Trends for 2015 (mentioned above), I write about my top tips for updating the bathroom, and a window furnishings post that includes a fantastic reader offer AND a chance to win a $500 voucher to spend at Lahood Window Furnishings. All this and more great articles from Cocksy and our property expert Stephen Hart. Enjoy!
