Josephine and Christoffer Du Rietz of Mallorca-based Durietz Design & Development are deeply passionate about transforming charming old houses into spectacular homes, which they then sell. Their latest completed project, Camp Roig 31, is located in the heart of Alaró, a quaint Mallorcan town on the southeast foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. Originally built in 1910, the 600 square metre townhouse and sun-drenched 410 square metre courtyard had not been cared for in over a decade when Josephine and Christoffer first discovered it. Despite being in very bad shape, they saw huge potential, and have since carried out a complete restoration and upgrade, right down to the very last detail. I’ve been following their journey on Instagram and have been blown away by watching the transformation process. The end result - a luxury family estate that pays respect to the original architecture - is nothing short of breathtaking.

Though subtle, the original architecture of the house had certain standout features. This allowed Durietz Design plenty of room for new interpretations without taking away from the soul of the house. Their vision was for a toned-down art deco inspired theme, combined with strong Mallorcan heritage features. Working with dramatic shapes created with natural materials and an earthy palette both inside and out, they were also careful to retain the utilitarian roots of the house.

Many of the lighting and furniture pieces were custom designed by Durietz Design specifically for the house. These sit alongside beautifully curated lighting from Contain, Lumina, Flos, Artilleriet, and carefully sought out furniture (both vintage and new) from Tacchini, Cassina, Vitra, Menu, Fogia, No Early Birds, Dusty Deco, and Cappelen Dimyr, among others.

The main entrance at Camp Roig is wonderfully spacious, providing a direct view through the house to the courtyard. To the left are Walnut panelled walls with hidden doors to a powder room, cloak room and laundry. The wine cellar (complete with Camp Roig House Wine) living and dining room, kitchen and breakfast area are also on this level. The kitchen is truly the heart of this home and features custom made cabinets in solid walnut, paired with light cream Italian travertine, taps from Vola and top of the range appliances from Miele. The kitchen also has a breakfast corner with built-in sofa, an original restored fireplace and a tap and stone sink for drinking water. The kitchen leads to both indoor and outdoor dining areas.

The combined living and dining areas in this downstairs space are ideal for social gatherings. At one end of the dining area is a large original restored marble fireplace for those colder winter evenings. The custom made solid walnut dining table fits 10-12 people and is paired with solid walnut and cotton cord ‘Josephine’ chairs also designed by Durietz Design specifically for Camp Roig 31.

Each of the three living spaces (one for each floor) has its own purpose. The first floor features a calming space for guests or those staying in the rooms nearby, while the attic living room has been created as an escape from the ever-present Mallorcan sun. Removed from the rest of the house, it provides a more private zone to just lean back, watch a movie, play games, and enjoy the cooler atmosphere.

The residence includes five stunning bedrooms which each feature custom made furniture including marble bedside tables and headboards, Daphine wall lights from Lumina and bed covers in natural linen fabrics from Yutes. There is also a home office and yoga room (both of which have been designed to convert into bedrooms if desired). Elegant and peaceful, the office is furnished with a custom-designed desk and wall shelving, and a walnut and black leather chair from No Early Birds.

Though each of the five bathrooms are unique in terms of layout, they all feature Walnut and Italian travertine in a practical but striking design with plenty of storage and space.

The house features incredible spaces for outdoor living including the striking roof terrace and huge backyard with spectacular views of the Alaró peaks. The raised terrace running along the west side of the plot provides a lovely spot for breakfasts in the early morning sun.  There is also a large pool with sun chairs for the whole extended family, a lush garden area, a dining area with an outdoor kitchen, and a lot of additional space to enjoy.
