This stunning holiday home in Auckland is by the award winning firm Fearon Hay Architects. The owners, who are based in Canada, wanted to escape their winters for a beachside location and while it may be a long way from home, they fell in love with Auckland while holidaying here two decades ago. Designed for use exclusively during the summer months, the Takapuna beach home has a simple palette but plenty of texture and warmth thanks to rough-sawn marcrocarpa boards and ceilings, as well as exposed steel portal frames and timber rafters painted in a crisp white. Perforated metal screens installed around the entire structure can be opened up completely or shut down for privacy, while polished concrete floors and black joinery provide further contrast and texture. An understated approach to the interior styling completes the elegant yet laid back feel of the home.
