Pop Factory Shop

When it comes to shopping for the kids, I'm a fan of cool, comfy threads, fun bedroom decor and good quality toys that encourage imaginary play. Pop Factory Shop, founded by brother and sister duo Christopher Hope and Bridget Lee ticks all the boxes. Using their design backgrounds and the littlies in the family to test their products on, the clever pair have created a range of goods that appeal to adults and children alike. I particularly love that their products are unisex (so practical) and their "dark but playful aesthetic".

Based in Tauranga and just two months old, Pop Factory Shop already have a varied collection, with lots more in the pipeline. I couldn't resist buying a couple of things for the boys and I also have my eye on the Superhero Sidekick Capes... if your kids are into dress-ups as much as mine, you'll want to check them out!

I had a couple of questions for Bridget, which she very kindly took the time to answer...

You're a family business, and a creative one! Can you tell us about how you ended up joining forces with your brother (and how your Dad fits in), your design backgrounds and the launch Pop Factory Shop?

The 'Hopes' were growing and with so many young ones new to our wider family we thought it'd be nice to make some things for the littlies that we liked, but as we tinkered we figured some of our friends might like what we were doing too.

We both did a bachelor of arts majoring in graphic design and our dad comes from a canvas manufacturing background. He'd made us school backpacks growing up that at the time we thought were daggy, but now we reckon they're pretty cool.

Where do you get inspiration from for your designs - travel, the web, magazines, your own kids etc?

Mostly from nostalgia. Remembering being young and what us 90's kids thought was rad. The boys inspire us all the time. After all this stuff is primarily for Harper, Henry and Marlo! Our blog Pop Factory has inspiration and work of our own that triggers thoughts, but from the start we knew we wanted it all to be unisex and that helped us find our dark but playful aesthetic.

Your newest product, the capes, are super-cool! Tell us about those.

Thanks a lot! They were right in time for Halloween. We made them reversible like our masks so the little ones can always feel like superhero sidekicks. We encourage imagination. Running round pretending is more fun than not. Harper loves it!

What are you working on right now?

We're working on Christmas. We have pillow cases, onesies and more Little Goldie wall decals on the way, as well as some more patches for our backpacks.

You're still very new, but what are your plans for Pop Factory Shop?

We hope to make a lot more things. We'd like Pop Factory to organically grow into a one stop shop for young families - children and parents. Homewares, artworks, stationery and bedding. A factory shop of popular culture inspired goods. Our next range will be for winter and we're hoping to do twice as much stuff.

Thanks Bridget! Shop the entire range here and be sure to check out their blog and like their Facebook page to stay in the loop.

I was very happy to discover the Melbourne based design firm Studio You Me thanks to Est who featured one of their incredible projects recently. Looking through their portfolio, I was further wowed by what I saw. Founders Kestie Lane and Hana Hakim, share a love of design. Their unique strengths, individual styles and personal friendship has resulted in a great business partnership. Hugely talented, the pair work on interior projects across residential, workplace, hospitality and retail design. They also collaborate together on graphic, event, furniture and product design.

Starting with the Brighton Residence that initially caught me eye, I love the use of custom black-stained American Oak veneer and bright pops of green and orange. Danish white limed floors and white walls add further contrast to the dark cabinetry.

The urban apartments, Morton Avenue, are simple yet elegant. Featuring a black and white palette with industrial accents, I love the tiling and round accents such as the hooks and bathroom mirror.

Slattery Australia is a multiple award-winning workspace dubbed the office everyone would love to work in. I can see why! Featuring a sophisticated white palette and refined black elements, the mix of black in-filled ships deck floor and steel framed glazing is divine.

We've just had Labour weekend here in NZ, and although I had some work to do, it was mixed in with visits to the beach with the boys, a couple of runs, dinner out and catching up with friends. All in all, it was a lovely long weekend, with sunshine and some much needed rest and relaxation. I also got in a good dose of Pinterest and discovered some amazing homes. Here are three that really stood out for me.

A repin from Deborah Gordon of the blog Ollie & Sebs Haus, the dining area above with its white painted floorboards and gorgeous mix of chairs had me clicking over to Deborah's post to find out more. There I discovered that the home, currently on the market in Sweden, belongs to Elin Kickén, a freelance interior stylist, and assistant to Sarah Widman, whose work I also love. You can seen many more images over at Västanhem Mäkleri & Interiör where the home is listed, but these are some of my favourites.

I love Elin's beautiful pared-back style. White and bright, the interior features cool framed prints, and simple hanging lights. The bedroom has a relaxed vibe with Muuto dots, gold accents and a casually-styled side table.

This next image was repinned from Catherine Lazure-Guinard, who featured this stunning home on her fabulous blog Nordic Design

Catherine describes the the interior style of this Stockholm apartment as Nordic meets Ethnic. This can be seen in the bedroom, which has a gorgeous mix of pieces including a reindeer hide, Thonet chair, simple brass pendant and statement wall feature.

An incredible warehouse conversion in Melbourne, this next repin was thanks to Est Magazine, who featured the home here. Owner Lynda Newton, a fashion designer, has used her eye for colour and texture to transform the factory. Dark floors, white walls and black joinery creates a striking monochrome palette, perfect for showcasing an amazing collection of vintage furniture, bold artworks, and vibrant rugs.

Finishing off with my latest Pinterest moodboard, I curated this for the long weekend, but also to provide inspiration for the week ahead.

Before I go, I'm thrilled to announce the winner of the Lahood Giveaway. Congratulations to Jeanette Sweet!! Thanks to Lahood for their generosity and to everyone who entered.

Homes to Inspire | Swedish Style in Sydney

When I came across this lovely Swedish-style home in Sydney today, it was the bathroom that really made me sit up and take notice. Although small in size, it speaks volumes in terms of simple yet clever Scandinavian style.

Located in Kensington, the two-bedroom apartment has been beautifully renovated by its owner Frag Woodhall, a product and industrial designer. Developed around the idea of 'Swedish Summer Cabin', that enviable Scandinavian mix of simplicity, minimalism and functionality is seen throughout, especially the bathroom. Rich Baltic Russian pine wall-panelling creates warmth, while black tapware provides contrast and interest to the predominantly white space. Then there is that incredible sliding re-machined door. It really gives the room an edge, don't you think?

The one-man renovation project, with Frag being both designer and builder, took nine months to complete. Along with the typical Scandinavian monochrome palette, Swedish influences are seen in every room. I love the interchangeable wall hanging cabinetry that sits on a peg rail in the kitchen above. Charming yet unpretentious, this home has an incredibly fresh and welcoming feel.

Many people work from home these days, especially those who freelance in creative fields. I love seeing how people express themselves in this very personal space, especially those who are artistic, or like me, very visual. One of the highlights of building a new home has been the opportunity to create my own workspace, and as much as I love how it has turned out, I'm still constantly inspired by what I see around the web.

I've picked out some recent favourites to share with you.

The office of Copenhagen graphic designer Louise Breyen has a light and airy feel, with white painted floorboards, pale wood furniture, and a collection of her beautiful artwork. The sheepskin adds a touch of cosiness.

When it comes to Scandi-cool, the workspace of Deborah Gordon, from Ollie & Sebs Haus is spot on, much like all of Deborah's styling. I especially love the String Pocket Shelf and Playtpe Poster.

Having visited the home office of one of my favourite NZ jewellery designers Lindi Kingi, I've seen first hand the amount of tools and materials people in this field use, and how organised they need to be. This home office, belonging to Melbourne jeweller Kim Victoria Wearne is another amazing example. The perforated peg board, which provides the perfect place for hanging tools is genius. Featured on The Design Files, I recommend you check out the entire home tour - it's incredible!

I recently discovered the interiors blog Cecilies Lykke when I came across this gorgeous workspace on Instagram. So bright and fresh, I love the long trestle table. The moodboard and fairy lights are so pretty!

Another great find via The Design Files, this stunning home office screams creativity. Belonging to Theo and Soula Mantalvanos, the husband and wife team behind graphic design studio Origin of the Image, the painting by Rachael Guthridge is the hero for me.

To see many more inspiring home offices belonging to clever creatives, check out my Workspace Pinterest board

Before I go, I have a couple more things to share with you. Karla Goodwin of Bluebells Cakery fame has just released her first ever cookbook, and I had the pleasure of attending the launch last night. I have never seen so many beautiful cakes! Much like her baking, this book is heavenly, and with Christmas fast approaching, I think it would make a beautiful gift. Or why not treat yourself! Pop over here to purchase a copy.

Lastly, for those of you who know all about The School, and its impending arrival to Auckland this weekend, I found out today that I will be going to Megan Morton's Science of Styling workshop on Saturday, thanks to my newest sponsor Mildred & Co, who will be hosting the series. I am beyond excited and I look forward to reporting back, and sharing my new found skills with you very soon! The School is bringing with it a range of amazing classes, and some still have places available. To find out more, pop over here.

Home Build Update

There hasn't been a lot of progress on the home front lately, although hubby did finally mow the lawns on Sunday! I'd love to get a landscape designer in to give some advice, however there's no money leftover for such luxuries! We have a large pohutukawa tree over our deck, which I'm really hoping will flower in time for Christmas. Next on the interior to-do list, is to finish off my eldest son's room, by choosing some bedding, and ordering a few more cushions and wall decals. I have some new shelves for both my youngest son and the downstairs living room, but it's just a matter of finding time to put them up!

I had been waiting patiently for my LET LIV rug to arrive for under the dining table, but it was touch and go as to whether I could get the right size - they come in three sizes but sell like hotcakes! I considered the cool grey and milk colour, which is also gorgeous, but I really felt that the black and milk would be ideal. I had envisaged how it would look for such a long time, and my heart was set on it! LET LIV director Natalie Sorensen, being the absolute gem that she is, came to the rescue and I was very excited when it arrived this morning. I immediately got it set up and took some photos to show you!

I now feel like the dining area is complete! You're probably wondering what I did with the smaller rug, and I have to say that was an easy decision. My office was calling out for it!

I love the look of layered rugs, so I've overlapped my calf skin hide from Koko Classics.

There are another couple of new things in my office. The cute little Skyscraper Tealight Holder on the top shelf above was a goodie bag gift from the Bo Concept pop up store opening I attended last week. Located down at Britomart (Australis House, 36 Customs street East), if you're in Auckland you must visit. The 2014 collection has also just been launched, so grab yourself a catalogue and a cuppa - loads of eyecandy! Or check it out here

Citta Design, another favourite, has also popped up down at Britomart, right next to Bo Concept. I scored an amazing deal on a couple of their products recently, over on ONCE'IT. If you haven't yet joined up to this site you should! They have a constant stream of designer homewares, accessories and fashion sales. I've written about my love of felt over in this Felt Homewares & Accessories post, especially when it comes to storage boxes, which I don't think you can ever have enough of! This grey pair is fantastic. Currently making good use in my office, they may end up storing kids toys once I have that area of the home sorted. Another thing on the to-do list!

When I saw these Citta Design striped plates I had to have them. Great for use as lunch plates, they are almost too pretty to store away.

Lastly, I'm now the proud owner of my very first Stendig Calendar, which I first introduced you to in this post last year. The iconic wall hanging had been on my wishlist for our new house, so when LET LIV announced they were bringing them in I felt like it was meant to be! Get in quick as there is only a limited supply, and I have a feeling they won't last long. Still in its box here, I can't wait to put ours up, so I don't think I'll be holding off till January. Although I still need to decide on where it's going to go. Watch this space!

Have a fabulous weekend, and I'll see you back here on Monday with another gorgeous giveaway!

Apologies for the no-show yesterday. The day slipped away from me, in part because I had to get the house ready for a product shoot I was styling in the afternoon. Perfect timing after the Megan Morton Styling Masterclass I attended on the weekend. An amazingly inspiring day, I couldn't wait to put some of what I learnt into action! I'm also looking forward to sharing the results of that shoot with you on the blog soon.

As you know, I'm a massive fan of the Danish graphic designer and artist Kristina Krogh, who hit the ground running with her first collection that I introduced you to here. In addition to a recent collaboration with Ferm Living, one of my favourite Danish homeware brands, Kristina has produced a stunning new range of art prints.

Incredibly authentic, Kristina's work is further enhanced by her beautiful styling. When I look at each of her styled pieces, I can't help but be inspired by the colour palette, textural effects, and accompanying objects. So much so, I've drawn from one that I particularly love, to curate ten picks from my current wishlist to share with you.

Although I'm still quite new to Instagram, it's fast becoming an important part of the social media side of my blog, and it's addictive! As a blogger, I find Pinterest to be an amazing tool for sourcing and bookmarking ideas, and for driving traffic to the blog. While I like to share photos of my own styling, home and work, it's predominantly a place to pin images sourced from elsewhere, or repin from those who I follow. As such, it's a constant pool of inspiration and of course highly visual, which I love.

Instagram on the other hand is more personal. I take photos of our home, events that I attend, and sometimes the kids. I like that it gives a behind the scenes look at my life and blog, but what's more, it provides a great way to connect with others.

Images via my Instagram

Today I'm starting a new occasional series, Instagram Ideas & Inspiration. Similar to Pinterest Picks & Peeks, it's a way of sharing some of the instagrammers who I follow and love. If you're on Instagram, I'm sure like me you'll be able to gain ideas and learn from these clever people. If not, you'll still be able to check out their feeds and feel really inspired. Either way, I'm sure these images will leave you wanting more!

First up is Hanna Ahlin, a Stockholm-based freelance interior designer and stylist. I love her effortless style, which is a unique mix of Scandi, boho and vintage. Her blog is also fantastic.

Jessie Webster of Sweet Thing Blog has over 30 thousand followers, and it's easy to see why. Based in Los Angeles, Jessie is an incredibly talented photographer, and her feed of photos, taken only on her iPhone, will take your breath away.

Lastly, I just have to include Alice Gao, who has a remarkable following of over 640 thousand! Long before I joined Instagram, I had been captivated by Alice's photos on her blog Lingered Upon. Her ability to capture simple everyday things with such beauty is astounding.

Are you on Instagram? I'd love to hear what you think of this new series!

MintSix | Store Opening & New Products

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of featuring the launch of the online homewares store and styling service MintSix. Founded by Dunedin sisters Ella Murdoch and Talia O'Connor, the clever and ambitious duo have recently taken the next step in making their dream a reality, by opening a retail store. When Talia emailed me a couple of months ago with the exciting news, there were cyber high-fives all around. Being that I'm in Auckland, and knowing what an amazing eye for design these girls have, I'm a little sad that I can't visit the shop in person. I have however been pestering Talia for some photos to share with you, and this week she came through with the goods. I'm sure you'll agree it all looks fabulous!

Along with the opening, MintSix have expanded their product range to include such international brands as UASHMAMA, Elms + King, Brita Sweden, Kip & Co and Pony Rider, not to mention the gorgeous Dutch brand HK Living (swoon) and Nynne Rosenvinge art prints that I recently featured hereTrue to the MintSix signature style, heavily influenced by the sisters travels, there are also new treasures from Turkey, Africa, Uzbekistan and Morocco.

It was really hard to choose from all the fun and stylish products on offer, but here are some of my favourite picks. There are still a few to be loaded on the website. (Poor Talia, I'm so impatient!) But they will be available in store, so make sure you pop in to see the full range if you're down that way! The store is located at 290 Highgate, Roslyn.

1 Pony Rider Swiss Alps Wall Dot
2 Large Workshop Lamp in Black by HK Living
3 Charcoal, Grey & Yellow Arrow Cushion
4 Yellow Anglepoise Lamp (available in store)
Pony Rider Three Points Cushion
HK Living Marble Board
HK Living Teak Breadboard
8 Elms + King Gold & Yellow Clutch (available in store)
9 Charcoal Geometric Cushion

For more MintSix style inspiration and expertise, follow them on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and their blog.

A couple more things before I go... I had the urge to do a moodboard today, especially being that it's Friday.

Lastly, I just want to say a huge thanks to everyone who has entered the worldwide CULTIVER giveaway - what an amazing response! Entries close on Sunday at midnight (NZ time) so get in quick, if you haven't already. I can't wait to announce the lucky winner on Monday morning! Have a lovely weekend.

Interview | Superette

A while ago I was asked to write a guest post for Superette. Jumping at the chance to contribute to what is one of Australasia's leading online style destinations, I also took the opportunity to set up an interview with them. Founded by James Rigden and Rickie Dee, two friends who bravely threw in their 'nine-to-fives' to set up Superette, the business has now been going strong for over a decade. Their first store, operating out of an industrial warehouse in Auckland's Freeman's Bay, was built upon the philosophy of creating an inspired retail space of sought-after and unique products that go beyond clothes hanging on rack. Now with three retail stores and a rapidly growing online store, they still handpick each season's selections based on fashion and objects that they desire for themselves.

Staying true to that philosophy has paid off, earning them a huge cult following and most recently, the launch of Superette Space at the Ponsonby flagship store in April this year. The carefully curated selection of new lifestyle products, includes homewares and furniture, as well as a capsule collection of Superette's own designs including art, studded taxidermy skulls, pillows, and hand painted deer antlers.

There is just so much home goodness on offer that when I was asked to pick some of my current must-haves for the guest post, it was really hard to choose! It also brings me to some exciting news. Superette have just announced that they will be introducing the Superette Space concept to their Nuffield Street boutique in Newmarket. Hooray! Closing today, the boutique will be taking over the space next door and undergoing a serious transformation. Reopening on Saturday 16th of November, you'll find all of the lifestyle range including boutique bedding, throws, cushions, prints, limited edition coffee table books and much more. Also look out for some new and exciting international brands, two of which are Scandi favourites of mine. I'll hand you over to Rickie, and let her tell you more about it....

You've come a long way since opening the doors to your first retail store in 2001. What have been some of the biggest highlights to date?

There have been many highlights over the past 13 years. Each and every time we open a store has to be a major one though. We love the process of creating a new and exciting space for our customers. I Love working in a creative and busy environment each and every day so I guess you could say that is a highlight and the fact we are still doing what we love after 13 years. The website side of our business is the newest addition and is at a pretty exciting stage as it's growing so fast each and every day.

Have there been any major hurdles or challenges along the way, and if so, how did you overcome them?

We started the business when we were very young so have learnt a lot along the way. I think sometimes learning from mistakes is where we have gained the most knowledge from. Starting so young meant we had no real concerns if the concept wasn’t to work but at the same time we had to learn as we went along and at times it meant we didn’t get taken seriously.

In addition to your three NZ retail stores, you have an E-boutique and huge online presence. How has social media helped grow your brand?

Social media is a big part of our business and we focus on it daily. It has helped to build a strong Superette culture and lifestyle. We can also interact with our customers more frequently and in real time.

How would you describe your personal styles and how is this reflected in your overall aesthetic for the store and your product range?

Everything we buy in store we have to love and our buying has always stayed true to this.

Who are your favourite designers, both locally and abroad?

I am a big fan of Bassike. They offer a great range of everyday essentials that work in so well into my busy family lifestyle. We have just worked on a Co Lab collection with them as we all love it so much here at Superette. I love a good leather jacket and West 14 gets it right every season with great cuts and detailing. I find each season I justify to myself why I need another one! Then Ksubi is great for their tees and denim.

From Superette Space I am a huge fan of Kip and Co bed linen and the new Bloomingville homeware. Then we have just received the cutest range of Varpunen Saks (from Finland) in cute geo shapes. Perfect for on decks with towels in or for hiding away kids toys.

You recently launched Superette Space, a range of homewares and furniture. What have been the most popular products so far?

Our Superette range has been a hit, with the prints and pillowcases being a complete sellout! This is something we will continue to build on each and every season due to its success. Kip and Co, Pony Rider and the recent arrival of Bloomingville has also been very popular. This section of our Ponsonby store has in fact been such a huge success so we are about to expand our Newmarket store (open 16th November) to house the same concept. Perfect in time for Christmas.

With the expansion of Superette, how have your roles changed? Are you still in charge of the buying etc? How many staff do you now employ?

We now have around 30 staff at Superette. My main focus from the start of Superette has been the buying and stock and it still is today. I have learnt to multi-task very well with work – and still love working on the shop floor too, so you’ll usually find me here once or twice a month. I am a pretty busy person but love it this way.

What's inspiring you right now... travel, designers, websites, magazines etc?

Blogs, magazines and travel are always my places for inspiration.

What's next for Superette? Any exciting projects or collaborations in the works?

We are focusing on the expansion of our Newmarket store currently have exciting Co Labs being released with designers every month. Pretty exciting!! We do also have a few other things in the pipe of which will come to life in 2014.

Rickie Dee and James Rigden in the Ponsonby Superette. Image courtesy of Superette, taken for Urbis Magazine.

Huge thanks to Rickie for this fantastic interview. I'm sure if you're in Auckland you'll join me in visiting the Newmarket Boutique when it re-opens! For all store locations take a look here, or shop online here

Before I go, I'm thrilled to announce the winner of the Cultiver Giveaway. Congratulations to Jaydn Claire Hammond!! Thanks to everyone who entered, it was an amazing response, and big thanks to Cultiver for their generosity.

Local Loves | Bedding Roundup

When browsing online homeware stores I often head straight for the bedding section. In part it's because I'm always on the lookout for a new set, but it's also because I love textiles, especially the layering that comes with making up a cosy bed. Sheets, duvet, pillowcases, cushions and a throw... there are a lot of options, but that just makes it more fun! Not to mention the fact that nothing beats the feeling of climbing into a freshly made bed, and getting a great night's sleep. Which is why lately, it feels like the universe has been calling to me! I've had sponsors offering amazing giveaways (thank you Cultiver) others telling me of their gorgeous new bedding ranges, and I've come across a few myself. All local finds, I've decided to round them up in one post for you!

This new Hexagon range from Thread Design ticks all the boxes for me. A gorgeous Scandi-inspired geometric print, it comes in two lovely colourways including blush and mustard. The natural linen-cotton mix is beautifully soft, and well suited to any interior style. In true Thread Design fashion, the range comes with mix and match cushions, pillowcases and sheets, so that you can co-ordinate your bedding with your decor. You may have seen the picture below, that I posted on Instagram yesterday. Sarah very kindly lent me some of the new pieces for a shoot of my home. The blush perfectly matches our interior don't you think? I paired it with a Thread Design velvet cushion in pewter for a bit of depth, and my Aura Home Crosses Throw.

I also love the Thread Design Natural Linen Throw shown below.

I've just had the pleasure of being interviewed for the Tessuti Journal and when I was asked to pick four favourite products from their beautiful store, one immediately jumped to mind. The new range of Stonewashed Linen bedding is exquisite! Pop over here to read my interview and find out more.

I love it when local stores make Scandinavian brands accessible to us here in NZ. Surrey Park, the gorgeous Wellington-based online store has just brought in the latest bedlinen range from By Nord. The Danish homeware brand founded by Hanne Berzant is known for its simplicity, functionality and authentic Danish design aesthetic. Inspired by the diversity of the raw yet beautiful Nordic nature, the collection includes pure white cotton bedding with striking animal prints. So unique, I love the pillowcases which feature a description of the animal in Danish on one side and English on the other. The Wolf and Deer are two of my favourites.

Arriving to Surrey Park as we speak, the collection also includes a stunning range of cushions featuring nature-inspired designs such as feathers, deer skin and Icelandic horses. I love the organic feel of bringing a little bit of the outdoors in. The Pine Forest Cushion shown below is one of my top picks. Layered into your bedroom mix, or as an extra throw cushion on the sofa, any of these will add great texture and interest to your bedroom or living space.

I recently introduced you to Jamie Kay, the Canterbury based Mum, designer and online store owner. Since then, Jamie has been very busy sourcing gorgeous fabrics and designing her very own line of kids bedding and throws. Her new reversible Cross Blanket is both stylish and versatile, featuring one side in black with white crosses, and the other in white with black crosses. Made from 100% cotton, these throws are super soft, perfect for keeping precious babies cosy, but light enough to be used all-year round. As well as the cot size they come in a single size. To pre-order yours for delivery early January, pop over here.

Jamie's new range also includes these cotton linen Cot Duvets. Featuring cute polka dots, they are available in four different colours to suit every nursery.

I hope you enjoyed that roundup! I'll see you back here tomorrow.

Dining Chairs | Inspiration & Wishlist

I've talked before about my love of chairs and how much I would love a set of Wishbone Chairs for the dining table. Of course I would have to save up and buy one at a time, and it would probably take me forever, but it would be worth it! Designed by Hans Wegner in 1949, the rounded shape of the chair is really beautiful. In fact most of my favourite dining chairs have a similar elegance and aesthetic. In addition to the design classics that have well and truly stood the test of time, there are some newer designs that I currently love, from Danish brands such as HayMuuto and &Tradition. Combining form and function, these chairs not only look incredible, they will go the distance when it comes to comfort at seated dinner parties!

Scrolling through my Pinterest I had many stunning images of the chairs mentioned above, especially Wishbone and Thonet chairs. Here are a few, but if you need further inspiration check out my Dining board

Home Build Update | Diamond Lights

In the big scheme of things, today's Home Build update features a small step in the journey. But to me, it's a really exciting one! Long before we even moved into our new home, I decided I wanted some Swedish Eric Therner Diamond Lights. I'd only ever seen them on the web, but they looked so pretty. I've always loved the look of simple hanging pendants, and although I wanted something a little bit different for our living room, I didn't want them to compete with the Muuto Unfold Pendants hanging over the dining table.

Having tracked them down from a shop in Australia, Fat Shack Vintage, I had to arrange my own shipping and hope that the very delicate glass bulbs would arrive safely. Luckily they did, and when I opened the boxes I knew I'd made the right choice.

At some point along the way, I had the idea of leaving the cords long, and hooking them up to the ceiling. I'm not sure if I'd seen it somewhere, but since then I have seen some cool examples. Here's a moodboard to demonstrate the sort of ideas that were swimming around in my head!

Fortunately Dean was right on board with my vision! Because we couldn't find the right screw-in lampholders for the Diamond Lights, we just left the cords tied up, with normal bulbs in. We finally tracked down the lampholders just last week (more on that later) so finally let down the cords. I was a little disappointed with the length, as I thought we had a bit more to play with, but when we sorted out the position of each, and put the hooks up, the results were amazing!

I absolutely love the clean lines that this creates, especially in our open, high-ceiling space. Minimalist, yet interesting, it suits my design aesthetic perfectly!

I had my heart set on gold metal lamp fittings, but I wanted just a touch of gold, nothing too heavy or overly industrial. Dean (bless him) found the right E27 lampholders at Kiwi Living, and at just $15 each, with free shipping, we couldn't believe how easy it was after waiting for so long to put them up! They also come in a silver finish.

Before I go, I just want to share with you an amazing project by Inadesignerhome (IDH), one of my favourite Australian online stores that I first introduced you to here. IDH are incredibly supportive of the blogging community, and to celebrate their online relationships with bloggers, they have dedicated the month of November to 30 Days of Bloggers. Everyday they have been showcasing a different 'social media guru' with a questionnaire, including their top picks from the IDH store. With a focus on my favourite season Summer, I was thrilled to participate. Pop over here to read my answers and see my Summer edit from the store, for which you'll receive a 15% discount, all day today!

Monday Mix Up

I hope you had a lovely weekend. Mine was pretty packed, but lots of fun. Our home was being photographed for an online magazine on Friday, following on from a really busy week, so today I'm playing catch up with a Monday Mix Up post.

If you follow a lot of Scandinavian blogs like I do, you may have come across 101 Karakters, a very cool competition running in the Netherlands. Legendary designer Piet Hein Eek designed a cabinet for Histor, and they called for people to submit ideas of how they would personally customise it, using Histor paint. From 2000 submissions, 101 were chosen and invited to Piet Hein Eek's workshop to create their designs.

The cabinet above shows how it looked prior to being painted, by Desiree of Vosges Paris. Her finished cabinet and impeccably cool styling below, makes it one of my favourites. Black paint, leather handles and studded corners gives it Desiree's signature edgy vibe and the rock 'n' roll feel she wanted.

Here is another customised design I came across via Bloesem that I really love. It was created by Maaike from My Deer, a company that specialises in branding, interior design and styling,

True to Maaike's lovely clean design aesthetic, she has left the cabinet bare, apart from the white dipped legs, and then artfully applied simple yet striking black typography. Her gorgeous styling sets it off perfectly.

In keeping with the monochrome theme, I thought I'd leave you with a couple of moodboards curated from my Pinterest boards. You may have seen this one last Friday on my Facebook page or Instagram...

And for today, I thought I'd kick-start the week with some positive thinking and a bit of sparkle...

In case you missed it, I posted the first of this Instagram series about a week ago, as a way of sharing my own feed, as well as those of some of my favourite instagrammers. I loved receiving feedback from those of you who are on Instagram, and I hope that it may encourage those of who aren't to hop on board!

Images via my Instagram

While I got the house ready for a shoot last Friday, I took advantage of the fresh flowers and gorgeous Hexagon Blush Bed Linen from Thread Design to take snaps for my IG feed! We received more beautiful flowers from friends on the weekend, and you can also see a glimpse of our washi-tape Christmas tree which has been a big hit with the boys! Our home will appear in the next issue of Adore Home, the gorgeous Australian online magazine, due out on December 1st. See a sneak peek over on the Adore Home blog

In yesterday's Monday Mix Up post, I introduced you to Maaike Koster of My Deer. Based in the Netherlands, Maaike is a multi-talented graphic designer and interior stylist, and proud mum to two boys. A recent discovery, her IG feed is one of the most beautiful I have seen. Filled with monochrome loveliness (the family dog included), my heart literally melts at the photos of her home and family.

If you're on Instagram, and you haven't yet discovered Stephanie Somebody, then it's time to climb out from under your rock! Somewhat of a legend in the world of Instagram, Stephanie has close to 129 thousand followers, which in the words of Megan Morton is "more followers than Kylie Minogue". A teacher at Megan's The School, Stephanie recently visited Auckland and from what I've heard, wowed all those who attended her class, Instagram Debunked. Her feed is pure magic, making it very hard to pick just a few photos, so I went with a 'kitchen' theme as a way of narrowing it down. It also showcases Stephanie's beautifully natural, organic style. For those not yet on Instagram, you can check out her website here

Knowing how big a fan I am of Weekday Carnival, the blog by Finnish photographer and designer Riikka Kantinkosk, it will come as no surprise that I find her Instagram feed to be up there with the best. What I love about Instagram is that it provides another layer and further inspiration from those whose blogs you follow. It's easy to 'like' and comment, making interaction easy and fun. Riikka's lovely styling and eye for detail is shown in these pictures which include her home and also a cute cafe. I love the combination of white with black and pink, as well as the addition of natural wood and metallic touches.

Interview | Techne Architects

I've been admiring the architectural and interior design work of Melbourne based practice Techne for some time, having featured one of their residential projects on the blog earlier this year. I'm sure like me, the stunning home restoration in South Yarra left you wanting to see more, so I'm happy to report that they have since launched a new website, showcasing an impressive portfolio across commercial, hospitality, and residential. Two of their projects, Fonda Mexican and Tonka were recently recognised in the 2013 Eat-Drink-Design Awards, and many of the bars and restaurants they have worked on are fast becoming Melbourne institutions.

Today I'm excited to share more of their work, alongside an interview with the firm's directors, Nicholas Travers and Justin Northrop, who lead a team of 16 people, including architects, drafts people and interior designers.

Regent St Warehouse

Can you tell us a bit about your backgrounds and the path that led you to architecture and setting up your own firm in 2002?

Nick: My pathway to architecture started from a fairly young age at school where I always had a strong interest in drawing, art and graphics and the decision to consider a career in the field of design was a natural one. Initially, I was more drawn to industrial design, but upon completing year 12 I was accepted into Architecture at Adelaide University in 1992. My focus on the field of Architecture was established in that first year at university and my dedication to the profession has continued to this day.

Justin: Growing up I developed an interest in architecture and construction from growing up amidst home renovations and following my father, a structural engineer, around building sites. It is possible that after telling enough people that I wanted to be an architect when I grew up that I started to believe it. In any case my interest did not wane and I was fortunate to be accepted into Architecture at The University of Melbourne and go on exchange to UC Berkeley before starting my career in Melbourne.

Essentially we met while working together at Peddle Thorp Architects in the design department as new graduates in the late 90’s-early 2000’s. This evolved into a partnership working together on some small hospitality projects on the weekend. Eventually we had the opportunity to design and operate our own bar and restaurant in the CBD called The Deanery. This project was the catalyst for starting Techne Architects. In the early days of the business we occupied office space with Six Degrees Architects in West Melbourne, before creating our own studio in Hardware Lane. We have been here since 2004.

Nick Travers and Justin Northrop

Fonda Windsor

You've recently launched a new website that showcases an impressive portfolio of work. What have been some standout projects for you, and why?

The standout projects have been key hospitality projects like the pubs we have produced for Sand Hill Road (The Bridge Hotel, The Prahran Hotel and The Richmond Club Hotel). These have been design driven projects with engaging design outcomes. There have also been some nice single residence projects like the Fitzroy House where the collaboration with the client and project team enabled a fully integrated design encompassing the interiors, the building envelope and the landscaped spaces. Projects in the automotive sector have also been rewarding in creating specialist retail and servicing environments in the form of large dealerships for prestigious brands like Porsche.

How would you describe the Techne design aesthetic? Would you say it's a mix of your own personal styles, as reflected in your own homes?

Techne highly values the power of collaboration and by working with different craftspeople and artists on projects we achieve surprising and varied results. Beyond this, our work has a modernist basis with an inherent warmth and tactility through the use of natural and recycled materials (we appreciate the patina, agedness and sense of history that these materials give to a project). We like using steel and clearly expressing the construction of a building (tectonics). Grounded-ness of the design (physically and philosophically) is a sensibility of our design but we also like to bring a playful approach which isn't too serious. We are always happy to make use of bold colour and use relevant decorations and furnishings to bring personality to a design/space.

Ultimately the design must be relevant to the place, culture, craft, climate and use.

Tonka

You work across many areas, both residential and commercial. Do you each specialise in a particular one? Which are you most passionate about and why?

We enjoy working collaboratively on all the projects in the office, with a fairly equal level of experience and expertise across the various project types. We do however have particular fields of interests, and in general terms Justin has a special affinity for our hospitality based work while I have a focus on our automotive and other commercial based projects. Beyond this, we are inherently passionate about working on projects where the client is invested in the idea of producing something special, whether it be a house, an apartment building, a shop or a café. There is delight to be had in all project types and scales.

Fonda Windsor

Where do you draw inspiration from... other designers, international magazines and websites, travel etc?

Inspiration comes from a broad base of interest, but the greatest and most vivid inspiration comes directly from our clients themselves, the project briefs that they provide and the sites/spaces that the specific project is occupying. These project specific influences always set us on a certain pathway and a field of research and discovery well beyond the work of other architects/designers and their published works. The great work of other architects is less about inspiring our projects specifically and more about driving ourselves to achieve equally noteworthy architecture and design. Young and passionate designers are also a great source of inspiration and a collaborative approach within our team allows for stronger design responses.

Can you explain the importance of sustainability for your firm, and how it plays a part in each of your projects?

Sustainability is embedded within our practice. We have an integrated design approach which layers traditional passive design techniques with environmental, social and economic aspects to create beautiful, healthy and low energy spaces. This results in designs that work, without relying on the addition of expensive building technologies.

Tonka

What are you working on right now?

We are working on numerous projects with a couple of notable ones being The Terminus Hotel in Abbottsford (nearing completion of documentation) and we have recently been commissioned to design a series of exciting new residences at the Amcor Papermill site in Alphington.

Black & White Prints | Friday Favourites

Yesterday I was working with one of my lovely clients, helping to get her home ready to put on the market. Home styling is a really important step to consider pre-sale, and I'm excited to be adding this Auckland-based service to TDC Style. If you or anyone you know is needing help in that area, please get in touch!

Another fun job I had recently was helping a client source some black and white prints for her home in Australia. Something that was right up my alley, it also led me to finding many more prints that I'd love to buy! Even if you're not as monochrome-mad as I am, a black and white print will mix in beautifully with colour, either on a picture wall, layered and leaning against a wall, on a shelf or hung solo. There are some standout posters that keep re-appearing in the gorgeous Scandi-style interiors that I'm constantly pinning, posting to Facebook, blogging about or adding to my moodboards. As such, I get a lot of readers asking where to buy them, so I thought I'd put those clear favourites into one post for easy reference.

The Andy Warhol posters are simple, bold and feature quirky phrases to add fun and whimsy to any interior. While they can be purchased from the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Malmö, sadly they are not available online. If I ever have the pleasure of visiting Sweden, I will definitely be bringing home my at least one, starting with the 'All Is Pretty' poster - my favourite!

I haven't yet acquired the Playtype G Poster that I put on my Home Build Living Room Wishlist earlier this year, but I will one day. Even though I go by my maiden name on the blog, my husband and kids' surname (and my married name) actually starts with a 'G' so I think this poster is a must for our family home! Take a look at the full range of Playtype Posters and shipping info here.

La Maison D'Anna G, a gorgeous online shop in France has a great range of posters, and they ship worldwide. As well as the Playtype G, and other Playtype Posters, Anna sells the beautiful range of black and white typography prints by Swedish designer Ylva Skarp who I wrote about here. I love both the Personality and Creativity posters, shown below.

Poster No Five is available from Wall Stuff in Sweden, but the good news is they ship worldwide. Judging by the fact that this is their best seller - I've also been asked on several occasions where to get it - five must be a popular number. My lucky number is eight, so I've got my eye on this one! You'll also find some cool number prints here.

Next up is the Cocoa Eyes Poster, featuring the Mazetti Ögon logo, by Swedish graphic designer Olle Eksell. Printed in 1999 for his exhibition at the Form Design Center in Malmö, Sweden, take a look here and here for some options on how to buy.

Bodie and Fou has a great selection of black and white prints. The Bat Girl Poster is another popular one. A cute idea for a girl's bedroom, it would add quirky fun to any room of the home.

Of course this is just the tip of the iceberg! Over time I've built up a good directory of places to source affordable online prints, so if you need help or advice, I'd love to hear from you. I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I'm hoping this glorious sunny weather in Auckland stays put!

Having recently interviewed Superette founder Rickie Dee, I was excited to see her stylish home featured in the latest issue of Homestyle. With a sneak peek over at Fancy I also saw these awesome images by photographer Duncan Innes popping up on Pinterest over the weekend.

Rickie showcases her cool style with pieces from the Superette Home range and pops of bright colour. I especially love the office moodboard and reindeer hide in the bedroom.

When I came across this next image of a hanging planter I had to find out more. The result of a collaboration between one of my favourite designers, Brooklyn-based Doug Johnston and Michigan-based photographer Debbie Carlos, the pair spent the summer creating a series of objects under the name 'Material Material'. By simply shipping each other raw materials for each other to use, they came up with some very cool designs, later shown at the San Francisco shop Little Paper Planes. The Hanging Planter which I love, was made out of a sheet of rubber sent from Doug to Debbie! See more of their creations over at Sight Unseen

I frequently pin the work of Swedish interior stylist and photographer Daniella Witte, who I featured in this post. Her newly decorated courtyard apartment caught my eye with its bright and airy interior, and signature pared-back Scandi style. Located in the country, but still close to both Malmö and Copenhagen, it would make a lovely weekend escape. See more photos over on Daniella's blog.

Lighting is definitely one of my favourite elements of interior design and styling, and I love pinning new finds to my Lighting board. The unique range of Helix lights by Brooklyn-based lighting designer Bec Brittain is exquisite. Made from custom brass hardware and LED tubes, I love the ellipse white marble and cravat granite counterweights.

Finishing off with a couple of Pinterest moodboards, I can't resist using this first colour combination again and again. Featuring soft pinks and blush tones together with muted greys, the effect is so calming. Perfectly suited to my mood at the time, I was thankful when Friday came around last week, after a busy few days.

Summer appears to have arrived early here, and I was so excited to see the first signs of red appearing on our Pohutukawa tree and the sun shining all weekend. I also made sure I got in some much needed rest and relaxation, with a moodboard inspired by the adorable photo of a toddler and puppy sleeping, which I pinned straight to my Moments board.

Interior Styling | Plant Storage Ideas

As you know, I'm slowly growing my indoor plant collection. While I'd love to buy more and more, I hesitate to do so because with each new plant comes the need for a new pot, and of course the bigger the plant, the bigger the pot. It all starts to get very expensive, which is why I've started looking for more affordable alternatives. One idea is using a natural woven basket. You may even have one lying around home you hadn't though of using. We got given a lovely big hamper from our building company, and straight away I thought of ways of how I could re-use the basket it came in. While it's currently storing toilet paper in the ensuite, I may try housing a plant in it one day soon!

The use of paper bags is becoming more and more popular for plants. Brands such as UASHMAMA make them in different sizes and a range of colours including black, white, grey, neutral, and even metallics. I have a gold one but I'd love to own more!

I love this idea for the Christmas Tree!

Big fabric bags or laundry hampers also make great alternatives to the traditional pot.

How about this easy DIY project? Made from hessian sacks, I stole this idea from a friend on Instagram. Jodie of Little Design Studio made these for her daughter's Fete, and later used them as pots for her plants. Genius! If like me sewing is not your forte, you can buy ready-made hessian sacks from places like this.
