Ever attuned to the needs of day to day life, Melbourne furniture brand Plyroom have launched two new additions to their range of considered storage and furniture for the home office - the Shibui Tall Bookcase and Shibui Floating Shelves. An exciting expansion to the original Shibui collection - which took its name from the Japanese term referring to simple, unobtrusive beauty - these new pieces continue Plyroom’s tradition of blending a light, minimalist aesthetic and hearty practicality.
As many of us have experienced, the past few months have been an experiment in telecommuting, which has largely proved effective and productive. With companies like Twitter announcing that employees can work from home ‘forever’, it's fair to say that the home office is here to stay. Having produced pieces for a minimal, practical and productive life since its beginnings in 2013, Plywood owner and creative director Elise Heslop says “In light of recent events, I believe that our design philosophies are even more relevant, with the need for a well-planned space and smart workstation imperative for this new reality.”
The beauty of Plyroom furniture is that each piece is designed to adapt to one's space and changing needs. With a narrower profile than its predecessors, the Shibui Tall Bookcase is more compact and can easily fit into small home offices or tight living spaces. Its versatile design means the piece is as appropriate for a home workstation as it is a living room or bedroom.
One of my favourite new features of the Shibui Tall Bookcase is the brass inserts, which provide a bookend, allowing for neat organisation and display of folders, books, documents and office items. These marry beautifully with the brass detailing that secures each shelf in place.
In line with the modularity and personalisation that are inherent to many of Plyroom’s pieces, additional shelves can be added to the Shibui Tall Bookcase upon request. By positioning the smooth, sustainably sourced birch shelves at different intervals along the Tasmanian Oak uprights, you can configure the shelf exactly as you wish.
The Shibui Floating Shelves offer even more flexibility, with flat birch panels designed to be fixed to any wall of any room. Available in two sizes, they can be applied separately or en masse, and feature softly rounded edges that are synonymous with the Shibui collection. From office to kitchen to living room, the floating shelves create a timeless aesthetic that sits comfortably within any interior.
