Earlier this week I attended the opening of The Shelter, an exciting new shared contemporary space in Auckland. Having had the concept in mind for many years, founder Vicki Taylor of leading NZ fashion brand taylor, was waiting for the right location and time to present itself. Her vision has now been realised with the stunning new store opening its doors at 79 Mackelvie Street in Ponsonby.
The Shelter houses a carefully curated selection of new and established brands, both from New Zealand and abroad. Vicki says “The idea is that you can access design-led versions of all your lifestyle essentials at The Shelter. Food, clothing and homeware are all delivered to create a sophisticated and creative environment for discerning shoppers."
Brands include Maison Martin Margiela, Danish clothing designer Barbara Gongini, Canadian jewellery designer Arielle de Pinto and local brands such as Jimmy D, Monday’s Child from Christchurch and Vicki Taylor’s own brand, taylor. The Shelter also features homeware from The Foxes Den, an on-site café and bikes from tokyobike.
On entering the incredible building you can't help but be wowed by the pitched roof and high ceilings. Further enhanced by a bright white palette and contrasting black joinery, I love the simplicity of the interior fitout which features clean lines, huge indoor trees and wall mounted bikes from tokyobike. Opening out to a gorgeous private courtyard, the overall vibe is so welcoming and relaxed, I found it hard to leave!
