I first heard about Melbourne-based company Felix Furniture through my dear friends norsu interiors. The two teamed up recently to create some gorgeous imagery for the new furniture range and when I caught a glimpse of the stunning designs, I was eager to find out more. As luck would have it Felix Furniture contacted TDC, and here I am today excited to be sharing their wonderful story and photos with you. Founded by interior designer Antonia Morrongiello and her partner Ian Anderson, a cabinet maker, Felix Furniture specialises in creating bespoke contemporary furniture. While the business is still relatively new, the seed was sown many years prior when as a young girl Antonia would watch her father Felice build furniture from scratch. Later in life when her father was ill with cancer, she and Ian met and fell naturally into restoring old furniture together. Working away in her father's workshop and using his old tools, Antonia says he would sit with them in his frail state and pass on valuable tips and ideas. Such a strong influence, he taught them the importance of creating something that was functional yet beautiful. After his sad passing the legacy lives on, with the business named after him in the English version of his name, Felix.

Combining traditional and modern woodworking techniques, Felix Furniture produce pieces that reflect the urban, industrial aesthetics of plywood while also incorporating classic designs. In doing so, they are changing the the overall perception of plywood by pushing the boundaries of its applications in the contemporary home. I personally love the look of the exposed plywood edges. Representing simplicity in its most beautiful form, they provide a signature finish to the clean lines and minimalist designs. Supporting Australian based and owned businesses, all pieces are designed and made in their Melbourne workshop, using locally sourced, sustainable materials.

The new range includes the introduction of the beautiful Foss Collection, with a Buffet, Bedside Table, Coffee Table and Console. Aptly named after the word ‘Waterfall’ in Icelandic, the subtle wood grain of the American Oak veneer effortlessly spills over the edge of the Foss, allowing your eye to follow over all the elements of the piece. The door and drawer edges have been carefully bevelled to give a precision finish and all are constructed with push activated doors and drawers. The Brox Sideboard has an industrial edge thanks to its uniquely shaped pull handles, while the black steel legs brace the cabinet with raw strength. The fourth sideboard to be added to the Felix collection, the Flynn is made from Australian Backbutt timber veneered on premium birch plywood. Combining the Felix Furniture design traits of crisp mitred corners and exposed plywood edges, I love how the Flynn features brass detailing across the tops of doors and drawers.

The gorgeous Scandinavian-inspired Lilly Side Table features a simple white metal frame and Russian Birch Plywood top. Perfect as a solo piece, its clever design allows it to be layered on a sofa arm or bed.
