The Bed Head | Ideas and Inspo

$

Due to my love of minimalism, I prefer a simple white headboard, or none at all. However these recent finds have me re-thinking that, especially the first two. Simple DIY creations, the floating headboards not only define the space, but add warmth by way of natural wood. Install an over-hanging pendant light or some shelves directly to the board - the Normann Copenhagen Pocket Organiser is perfect - and voila, you have a very cool bed head feature.

Images: 1 | 2

The bedrooms below are cosy and inviting thanks to their fabric covered headboards which add contrast and texture. I really like the simple white, wide headboard in the last image because it provides the perfect ledge for a cage light.

Images: 1 | 23

In terms of interior styling, I usually think of the wall at the head of the bed as a blank canvas for adding artwork or a shelf. Unless of course there is a window like in our room. But these next images provide some new ideas, such as painting the wall in a block colour or two-tone combo, wallpapering in a graphic print or installing pieces of plywood to add warmth and contrast. I love the white painted brick wall in the room below. So spacious, the bed has actually been pulled out from the wall allowing for two lamps to be placed behind.

Clean lines frame the beautiful statement lamp below, and then quite possibly my favourite of all, a recessed wall providing a clever headboard alternative that doubles as a shelf.

The Shelter

Earlier this week I attended the opening of The Shelter, an exciting new shared contemporary space in Auckland. Having had the concept in mind for many years, founder Vicki Taylor of leading NZ fashion brand taylor, was waiting for the right location and time to present itself. Her vision has now been realised with the stunning new store opening its doors at 79 Mackelvie Street in Ponsonby.

The Shelter houses a carefully curated selection of new and established brands, both from New Zealand and abroad. Vicki says “The idea is that you can access design-led versions of all your lifestyle essentials at The Shelter. Food, clothing and homeware are all delivered to create a sophisticated and creative environment for discerning shoppers."

Brands include Maison Martin Margiela, Danish clothing designer Barbara Gongini, Canadian jewellery designer Arielle de Pinto and local brands such as Jimmy D, Monday’s Child from Christchurch and Vicki Taylor’s own brand, taylor. The Shelter also features homeware from The Foxes Den, an on-site café and bikes from tokyobike.

On entering the incredible building you can't help but be wowed by the pitched roof and high ceilings. Further enhanced by a bright white palette and contrasting black joinery, I love the simplicity of the interior fitout which features clean lines, huge indoor trees and wall mounted bikes from tokyobike. Opening out to a gorgeous private courtyard, the overall vibe is so welcoming and relaxed, I found it hard to leave!

Home Build Update | Marlow's Room

It's been a work in progress for a while, but the bed side of Marlow's room is now finished. I had fun getting creative with the opposite side when it was included in the 3M series, but this side still needed to be brought up to scratch. An added highlight with this post has been getting to use my new camera for the first time. It's a challenging room to photograph, and having worked with some gorgeous online stores and brands to pull this together, I'm so glad I could capture all of the gorgeous bedding and accessories with the clarity they deserve!

We started with the Brooklyn bed from Mocka, which fits in perfectly with our white palette and love of simple design. In addition we have the Mocka Bed Box, a set of double drawers that fit under the bed. Ideal for extra storage, I use them for spare sheets and pillowcases, while Marlow likes to stash a few of his favourite books. The castor wheels means he can easily slide them in and out himself.  Much to my delight Marlow chose the beautiful By Nord Wolf Quilt Cover, which along with the iconic Pia Wallen Cross Blanket and beautiful Icelandic Sheepskin, is from norsu interiors

As soon as I stumbled across the Crown Pillowcases by Jennifer + Smith online I knew they would be perfect for Marlow's room. While it was the gorgeous, minimalist design that initially caught my eye, I've since discovered that the feel of the organic cotton is what makes these pillowcases even more special. So incredibly soft, they really are fit for a king or queen! The monochrome grid design of the Surface Support cushion by Kowtow clothing (who are also known for their use of organic cotton) adds a nice finishing touch to the bedding.

I bought the shadow boxes back when we first moved in, but I was never happy with their mix of white, natural wood and green finishes. After giving them a few coats of Resene Black White to match our walls, I'm now satisfied. As is Marlow who uses them to house some of his favourite little toys such as the Sorry Angel Kewpie Dolls and the Cubebot Ninja which I got from Leo and Bella. A regular haunt of mine, it's also where I got our new Lucky Boy Sunday friend Mr Bell Wine and the cute Noodoll Dino Wall Hook. The Naked Lunge dolls Nigel and Bunny Boy from Simon James Concept Store are also well-loved.

I had been wanting some of the Hay Gym Hooks for a long time so was thrilled when Simon James Concept Store recently started stocking them. I used 3M adhesive strips to attach them because just as I suspected, Marlow likes to pull them off the wall! The Velcro means he can do so as he pleases, without causing any damage. They are still strong enough to hang light items of clothing, so we use them for his next-day-outfit or PJ's. The cute cloud coat hanger is from Perch Home

The Graphic Alphabets Print by RK Design, purchased long ago from The Minimalist has always been a favourite in our living room, but after a recent reshuffle it has ended up here, where it looks right at home. I hunted down the grey Felt Garland by felt Foxes for Jennifer + Smith to complete the look.

This post is brought to you in collaboration with Mocka, norsu interiors,  Jennifer + Smith and Simon James Concept Store

Urban Couture | Pop Up Shop

Earlier this year when I featured Urban Couture they had just opened the doors to their stunning showroom in central Sydney. Through interviewing co-owner Katriarna Rodgers I not only learnt of her love of European and Scandinavian design but also discovered an inspiring and ambitious woman who is  certainly not afraid to take on big projects, like the huge warehouse conversion that is now the impressive Urban Couture showroom and office space. Their latest venture is the opening of a Pop Up Store in Sydney's Moore Park Supa Centa, where they will be until the end of summer. Katriarna says the response has been fantastic so far, with many of their Instagram and social media followers stopping by to say hi. Unsurprisingly, locals are very excited to have them in the area!

Inside the store there is a beautiful range of furniture, artworks and homewares from favourite brands including Muuto, YlvaSkarp, Aura Home, and By Lassen to name just a few. All set against a striking dark blue backdrop, as expected the fitout looks amazing!

If you're lucky enough to live in Sydney or are visiting, be sure to stop by.  The store is located at the Moore Park Supa Centa, 2 Todman Ave, Kensington. For other enquiries including e-decorating pop over here, and if you live outside of Sydney don't forget you can shop online

Simon James Design | New Collection

It's no secret that when it comes to retail therapy, the Simon James Concept Store in Herne Bay is a favourite of mine. Homeware from their beautifully curated online store frequently feature on the T.D.C product round-ups and wishlists. The store however is just one arm of  the business, with NZ designer Simon James continually developing and manufacturing his own line of furniture for both the residential and commercial market. With a strong emphasis on function and attention to detail, his furniture sits alongside a carefully selected range of products from leading names in international design, as well as local design talent.

Simon has recently released a new collection which includes three exquisite sofas. Blown away by the beautiful clean lines and innovative design, I had a few questions which Simon has kindly answered for us today.

The Knack

I'd love to understand a bit more about the design process. What is the starting point for each new piece? Where do you draw inspiration from?

With regards to the three new sofa designs the starting point came from finding a single common element we could design three quite different sofas around. In this case it’s the arm and back detail. These three sofas were all designed with the home in mind. There is no overload on cushions, just enough to keep the seating refined and comfortable.

The new lounge chair was an extension of an existing design called the Felix chair. This was partly driven by listening to clients who liked the design but wanted something that had a larger footprint. We also included a full upholstered option called the Argo which was our interpretation on an executive chair for a breakout space.

The Passenger

Felix Lounge Chair

How long does it take to produce each new piece of furniture? Where are they manufactured?

The process can vary depending on the product. In this case some of these items have been on the drawing board for 18 months and others for eight months. All ideas still start with pencil and paper, from here we take the design through a rendering programme to understand its proportion better, before we start on the first round of prototyping. We had several designs tracking well through sampling so made the decision to release these in one hit. These items are all proudly produced in New Zealand.

Argo Chair

The Passenger

Is the collection also aimed at the overseas market?

Under the Simon James brand we design product for the New Zealand and Australian market.

The sofas are all beautiful but quite different in terms of design. Can you tell us a bit more about each one, their versatility in terms of configurations, fabrics, colours etc?

The three new sofas are fully modular which was part of the brief from the outset, so there are a multitude of configuration options to choose from. Because we make to order there are not too many restrictions around fabric or colour as long as the fabric is suitable for upholstery on the particular form.

For further information on the stunning new collection visit Simon James Design or pop into the Auckland showroom located at 61 Upper Queen St, Newton.

Variety Show Studio

Variety Show is a new online shop and graphic design studio located in Southern California. Founded by husband and wife team Amber and Mike Asay, the creative couple specialise in brand identity work and art direction. They also love creating their own work for others to have in their home, and have recently produced their first collection of prints showcasing their love of typography, lettering and illustration. While these debut prints have a distinct Scandi vibe, the couple say that stylistically they strive to bring different cultural stories and eras to their work.

Amber very kindly offered to send me a print and I chose the Shaped Glyphs. I love the clean lines and bold typography, screen printed in black and metallic copper. Striking in a black frame, I chose a white one because I know it will look amazing on my living room picture wall, alongside the other white framed prints. Such a fun print to work with, here's how I styled it for you today. I like it so much, it might end up staying here for a while!

Varitey Show ship internationally and even better, the prints are currently on sale, so be sure to pop over for a look, with your credit card handy!

Nodi Rugs | Organic Lines

Every time I pop into the beautiful Herne Bay Store Tessuti I admire the gorgeous Nodi rugs that are displayed on the shop floor. Created by talented New Zealand designer Olivia Smith, I'm excited to finally be sharing her incredible work with you today. On my latest visit to Tessuti, owner Ali told me of the newest Nodi collection, Organic Lines, which in addition to the beautiful rugs they have become known for, includes a new print collection. One artwork in particular caught my eye. With beautiful muted colours and fluid forms, it  is perfect for my office where it now continues to catch my eye as I work.

Inspired by the visual lines created by natural light, Olivia says "Organic Lines reflects both the balance and the imperfections of nature. Contrasting textures, shapes and a dynamic colour palette create natural yet structural designs."

Organic Lines Print - Design 3 from Tessuti

Organic Lines Prints - Design 2 by Nodi Rugs

I could only imagine how amazing the new rugs would be, and when Olivia sent me through the imagery, they didn't disappoint. Hand woven in India, they are pieces of art that will undoubtedly transform a space. Olivia's background working for textile houses in Milan, her extensive research during time spent in India, and her passion for quality, texture and finding beauty in the naturally imperfect shines through in the collection. Made from a combination of cotton, jute and banana silk yarns, the unique design and traditional weaving techniques result in an engaging, tactile experience. That said, I'm sure that they will be even more exquisite in person.

Take a look at the Nodi Rugs catalogue, where you will find the entire Organic Lines collection, the Looped Nodi Staples, as well as colour palettes, sizes and pricing.

Dark Walls in the Bedroom | x 3

There is something very appealing about a dark moody bedroom, especially when teamed with beautiful luxe linen bedding. The kind that drapes perfectly with just the right amount of crinkle, in soft muted colours and earthy tones, to create a stunning contrast against black or very dark walls. Black light fittings blend seamlessly (the Flos 265 Lamp is still a fave of mine), greenery 'pops' and you cannot go wrong with a white artwork or black and white photographic art to add further contrast.

The stunning black bedroom of Lina Kanstrup which she styled here for Residence magazine / Imagery via Emmas Designblogg, 79Ideas and Kanstrup Studios / Photographed by Kristofer Johnsson

I love how the headboard and open wardrobe in this next bedroom has been painted in the same dark grey colour as the walls. The workspace has been integrated into the room and  features shelves and a desk painted in the same grey, offset by a gorgeous muted shade of coral.

Styled by Pella Hedeby and Marie Ramse / Imagery via Stil Inspiration and Hitta HemPhotography by Kristofer Johnsson

Now one for the kiddies, because who says they can't have a dark bedroom too? I absolutely LOVE how Apphia Michael, the online fashion editor for Wallpaper*Magazine has taken a brave risk and painted her daughter Tallis' bedroom walls in an almost-black colour. Accents of pink and natural wood by way of the cot, Muuto Dots and Hay Gym Hooks add a soft touch, while the gorgeous MiniWilla poster and YarningMade blanket look amazing against the dark backdrop.

Menu at Home | Ladder + Wire Bin

Those who follow me on Instagram will have caught a couple of glimpses of my dreamy new Menu products recently. The Menu Ladder and Wire Bin, both from Simon James Concept Store have been on my wishlist for a while, and as expected they fit beautifully into our home. Understated and elegant, I love the versatility of these pieces which allows them to transition easily from room to room. Not only does the ladder provide the perfect finishing touch to our living room, I can use it to hang magazines and the odd throw.

Prior to ending up here it has been in our bedroom and looked so beautiful next to the bed, its absence has definitely been felt!

In keeping with our white String Shelf and pale wood floors I chose the white with light oak, but it is also available in the equally beautiful black and dark oak.  The Ladder looks gorgeous alongside The Overcast Artwork by MacArthur & Co, from Mildred & Co.

I knew that the Wire Bin would make the perfect companion for our Yeh Wall Table, once again providing a space to store small items such as magazines or a throw.

The nude colour was the obvious choice for our living room corner, but it also comes in a gorgeous moss green, chrome and brass

New Australian brand PAQME has just arrived at online store LET LIV. Makers of beautifully stylish rainwear, their Anywhere Raincoat features impeccable detailing.  Super-light, it packs into a cute little pouch to put into your handbag or suitcase, making it a must-have item all year round.

This is great news for anyone like me who has been caught out by unpredictable rain on many occasions, or has lost numerous umbrellas due to the wind! I keep telling myself I must invest in a good raincoat, and finally I've found one that I love the look of, that can go from casual to a little bit dressed up.

The classic trenchcoat style raincoat has a detachable hood with a drawstring and snap button neck closure. Made from waterproof material with a concealed front closure, the standout detailing mentioned earlier includes branded buttons and a gorgeous contrast interior trim.

The PAQME Anywhere Raincoats are available in four colours including black, dalmation, khaki and blossom. Keep an eye out for the next drop which includes reversible kids styles!

Interior Inspo | 3D Roundup

I'm giving you a dose of interior inspo today courtesy of the talented 3D artists who publish their work on Behance. Starting with a lovely loft apartment with incredible ceiling height and windows, followed by a clean Scandi-style bedroom design, both of these were designed by Tsvetan Stoykov. I can't help but notice his bedside table has been inspired by NZ designer Timothy John's Sidekick Collection!

Ever since I first showed you the incredible interior design work of Raya Todorova, I've been checking in regularly, eager to see new work. Here are her latest room designs which are in keeping with her signature monochrome style. I love the mix of marble and metallic accents in the kitchen, and the gorgeous cot and wallpaper in the sweet little nursery.

This elegant apartment featuring a mix of black and white floors and steel framed doors is a conceptual project by Oskar Firek. I've also picked out one of his stunning bathrooms to show you, from another inspiring home he designed here.

I came across a lot of cool bedrooms, but this one, La Maison d'inspiration IKEA by Alexandre Jarek, is my pick for today. It makes me want to step inside the room, walk across the beautiful herringbone floor and climb straight into the cosy bed and layers of luxe bedding.

Before I go I just wanted to tell you about a giveaway that's currently being run by BNZ GoodHome, the new website and quarterly email for which I am one of the contributors. Containing a collection of inspiration and expert advice for smart homeowners, if you sign up now, you could win a gorgeous Kate & Kate Jagger blanket from LET LIV! The offer is available until October 7, 2014. To sign up (you don't have to be a BNZ customer) pop over here

Savvy Studio, the Mexico-based multidisciplinary studio has an impressive portfolio of work. Today I'm going to show you one of their branding, industrial and interior projects, PAR LA ROY. A fashion boutique that promotes the work of designers including both emerging artists and established brands, this stood out to me because of its fresh, simple design.

When seeking out ideas for the home, I find that well executed store interiors can often offer inspiration. I love seeing elements crossing over into residential styling, such as with the use of freestanding clothes racks, simple display/occasional tables and open shelving.

In collaboration with Emilio Alvarez, Savvy Studio have created a predominantly white space and clear layout, enabling the ever-changing products to be displayed in an orderly and attractive manner. The metal tubing has been designed for structure, and to provide contrast with the fabric of the garments. I also love the tiled flooring, mirrored elements, wall lettering and plants. The branding follows suit with a clean but playful vibe.

Take a look at more of Studio Savvy's work here, including two more standout branding projects for Tea Company Tomás and surf shop LOOT

Urbis | Issue 82

I'm finally back into the swing of things after a 48 hour power cut that affected thousands of homes here in Auckland over the weekend. Caused by a fire at the substation, our suburb was one of the last to have power restored, in the early hours this morning. Unfortunately we are still without internet access so I'm relying on my iPhone, while dealing with the aftermath that includes piles of washing, spoilt food and of course keeping the kids entertained for the school holidays!

An upside to having no internet or TV was being able to catch up on some of my fave magazines, including the latest UrbisHere's a sneak peek of one of the beautiful homes featured, belonging to Tash McIntosh Moorman, owner of McIntosh Moorman Interior Design. Oozing character and charm, the kitchen which features a combination of marble and dark flooring graces the cover of this issue. The home also has incredible outdoor living spaces, offering plenty of inspiration for the summer months ahead.

For those on the lookout for bathroom and kitchen inspo, this issue is definitely for you. Featured inside are three homes with covetable kitchens and bathrooms, as well as a round up of the latest trends in colours, cabinetry, tiles and tapware.

Bedrooms | Stairs, Skylights + Ceiling Beams

I've talked before about my love of lofty spaces, high ceilings, pitched roofs, beams and sky lights. Recently I've come across some great examples and fresh finds centred around the bedroom. As much as I love the idea of skylights in the bedroom, I wouldn't want to be woken first thing by the light streaming in. The owners of the home below had the right idea, by installing skylights that can be closed.

Styled by Esther Jostmeijer and photographed by Sven Benjamins for vtwonen, see more of this gorgeous light-filled bedroom here.

Discovered via Emmas Designblogg a while back, I've been waiting for an opportunity to share this ancient blacksmithery in Lesbos, Greece. Transformed into a home while staying true to its original character, the preservation of old ceiling beams creates a rustic contrast with the new wooden structure, which houses beds, a kitchen and bathroom. At the same time they help maintain the weathered and lived-in feel, and most importantly the soul of the building.

Photos by Wichmann + Bendtsen for Kinfolk

The latest styling project by Annaleena Leino for BLOOCthis home features a bright yellow staircase leading up to workspace and bedroom nook with a beautiful big skylight.

Beautifully authentic styling as always by Annaleena, you can see more imagery here and here

Inside this delightful apartment for sale on Stadshem the quirky but unassuming little staircase leads to another gorgeous bedroom and workspace. More of a window than a skylight, the sloping ceiling creates the same effect, that of a lovely, light-filled space with cosy nooks for sleeping, reading and working.

Homes to Inspire | Fisherman's Harbour in Helsinki

I really admire the styling work of Minna Jones, and love following her blog Time of the Aquarius. Recently she worked on an interior design project in her home town of Helsinki, for two new waterfront apartments. Just like her own home which is always styled beautifully, the spaces showcase her love of Scandinavian design and talent for artfully mixing new design pieces with vintage finds.

The living room in the first apartment is the perfect example. Light and airy, Minna has chosen stunning furniture from Muuto and Gubi and added a vintage Merivaraa glass and metal trolley. Sheer curtains, a large patterned rug and plants provide warmth and texture.

Warm wood elements in the bedroom and office are given a vibrant punch by way of red linen bedding, a vintage rug and stunning Rival Chair by Konstantin Grcic.

Understated yet elegant, the living room in the second apartment again showcases a fabulous mix of old and new. An iconic beehive Pendant Light by Artek hangs above exquisite furniture from Nikari, a Finnish manufacturer of sustainable wood furniture, and a custom made side board by Lundia. The vintage black leather sofa fits in perfectly and gives the space a lived-in feel.

Recently featured in my Bed Head Ideas + Inspo post, I can't get enough of the DIY plywood headboard and Normann Copenhagen Pocket Organisers. I was pleased to see more of the room, including a full view of the beautiful grey linen, and Kaschkasch Mirror by Menu, which is still on my wishlist!

The kids went back to school and kindy today and the early start/morning rush was a bit of shock to the system! I'm also getting my head around the fact that we're halfway through October. As I'm sure many of you know, the last term of school is always a hectic one, with the life-work busyness reaching new heights, along with Christmas fast approaching. I do however feel a sense of calm at being able to blog without any distractions for the first time in two weeks, and waking up to 28K+ followers on Instagram this morning has given me an added boost! Here's a look at what's been happening since my last IG post

Images via @thedesignchaser

I have three gorgeous feeds to share with you today, starting with @witandelight by Minneapolis-based art director and designer and Kate Arends, who has a blog and design studio by the same name. Kate's passion for art, fashion and culture gives her an eclectic perspective on style which she showcases beautifully on Instagram, capturing moments throughout her day to day life. I highly recommend you join her other 100k+ followers, and also check out her blog if you haven't already. I've been following for a long time, so you can imagine my joy at receiving a couple mentions form Kate this year, including one saying my blog was her 'new favourite' at the end of this post

Images via @witanddelight

A lover of black, white and wood interiors, Germany-based designer and stylist Seraina Silja has perfected the art of creating consistency in her exquisite feed, @serainasilja. Always staying true to her own design aesthetic, no photo ever looks out of place. Having followed her on Instagram for a while, I just checked out her site and was further impressed by an extensive portfolio of graphic design and styling work. After I finish this post I'm heading back to see more!

Another highly creative individual, Meghan Plowman has a background in arts, graphic design and photography. Based in Perth, Western Australia, she currently works as an art director and stylist. I really enjoy seeing glimpses of her work on Instagram, which are often the results of collaborations with other creatives. Here are a few favourite picks, but you will find plenty more at @meghan_plowman, where she has a whopping 34k+ followers. Meghan is also currently working on the relaunch of her website The Orchard, so keep an eye out for that next year.

A new season usually brings with it a new wishlist, and this month I'm focused on spring cleaning and adding a fresh touch to both my home and wardrobe. The warmer weather calls for lighter layers of clothing, swapping the boots and high tops for slip-ons and sandals and looking ahead to summer. Already a proud owner of the original Roundie Aztec Beach Towel, gifted to me by The Beach People earlier this year, I was thrilled to see that Mildred & Co were now stocking them, along with some gorgeous new designs. A must-have for visits to the beach and park, and big enough for two people, I think we may need another. In addition to AWESOME I highly recommend checking out Therese Sennerholt's entire new range of prints. I love them all!

2. Awesome Print by Therese Sennerholt Design

Interior Styling | Small Spaces on a Budget

Today's post was inspired by the sweet little guest room below, that I discovered via the fabulous blog The Veda House. Described by owner Cassie as being 'itty bitty' she says it's really important to practice the art of restraint and keep small rooms clutter-free. I couldn't agree more! By using clever tricks like painting the walls a crisp white and replacing the closet handles, she has created a beautifully simple space that is warm and welcoming. Coat hooks for personal items, magazines, artwork and a touch of greenery add the finishing touches. I was also amazed to read that the headboard was found on the side of the road! Check out another one of Cassie's beautiful headboards recently featured on T.D.C in this post.

Images via The Veda House

As you know I love wall hooks and can quite happily find a use for them in every room of the home, the bedroom being no exception. Simple wire coat hangers in this next small space not only look great, they help keep magazines off the floor.

Images via Nordic Days

When turning a spare room into a home office is not an option, I recommend finding a spare corner to set up a small study nook. The budget may not stretch as far as to buy a gorgeous String Shelf desk like the one above, but the narrow size and shelving provides lots of inspo for the DIY'ers out there. The Shorthand Desk from Freedom and Jordi Kids Desk from Mocka (which are both fine for adults) are great options and to create some simple shelves, I recommend using these brackets from Father Rabbit and some simple shelves from Bunnings

Image via A Merry Mishap

A lovely addition to any clean, minimalist interior, ladders can be used in the living room, bedroom or even the bathroom. Because they take take up very little room they are perfect for small spaces. I found a fantastic DIY option with step by step instructions over on A Merry Mishap.

Images via A Beautiful Mess

Lastly, here's one for the kitchen thanks to A Beautiful Mess. An area where we commonly want to maximise space and create extra storage, I think this DIY Wire Utensil Rack is a brilliant idea. Perfect for kitchens that are lacking in terms of drawer space and cabinetry, it's straight forward to make and easy on the pocket.

Mahina Candles

Mahina is a boutique NZ candle company founded in 2009 by a dear friend of mine, Natalie Walsh. Incredibly smart and stylish, Natalie's natural affinity for beautiful fragrances and quality products heightened when she was living in France. Having travelled extensively around the world, she always picked up a new scented candle to bring home. This sparked her idea to produce a New Zealand premium fragranced candle range combining the best of France with Pacific provenance. By electing to work with a French parfumer to design their own fragrances, Mahina (whose name is inspired by the Luna Deity in Pacific cultures, meaning moon or moonlight), offers truly unique candles that will not only enhance the home, but help you to de-stress, and look after your general well-being.

I'm in awe of Natalie's knowledge when it comes to candles. Her background is in the wine industry and she has always had a ‘good nose’. She attributes her Niuean heritage on her mothers’ side for her ability to truly sense. “My mother is what we in the industry call ‘a super-sensor’; she can unravel the most complex fragrances, which I believe is linked to her heritage and upbringing, being closer to the land and that which it nurtures. Many people have commented to me that it is the sense of smell that most often evokes the strongest memories. We want our candles to elicit the same sense of relaxation and well-being that comes naturally on a Pacific Island”.

The Mahina Candles come in four exquisite fragrance combinations: White Night– Tubereuse & Gardenia; Eastern Splendour– Coriandrè & spice; Manor Born– Citron Vert, Basil and Mandarin; Empress Thé Blanc– White Tea with Jasmine. As you can see above, I'm currently burning a favourite, Empress Thé Blanc, as I work! The simple glass and monochrome packaging fits seamlessly into every room of our home, so you will no doubt be seeing a lot more of them!

Available throughout select retail stores, Mahina having just re-launched with a new  webshop, so that regardless of where you live or how you busy you are, you can experience the magic of Mahina by easily purchasing online. They would also make the perfect Christmas gift!

TEAM.WORK Launch | Studio Home + Trestle Union

A few weeks ago I caught up with NZ design blogger Julia Atkinson of Studio Home, following the recent launch of her exciting new collaboration series, TEAM.WORK. As the inspiring curator and voice behind one of the first design based blogs launching down under in 2008, I was excited to learn more about how she has now taken Studio Home's involvement with New Zealand and Australian creative businesses to new heights.

Together with young Auckland designers Mike Grobelny and Nikolai Sorenson of Trestle Union, they set about producing something new and different to their existing range of clean, modern trestle tables (which as you know I'm a big fan of). The result? A gorgeous collection of pot plant stands available in three heights and three colourways. One look at them and I was sold! With a simple, minimalist design that is both stylish and functional, I jumped at the chance to style one of these babies in my own home. Fitting seamlessly into every corner, I was impressed with the versatility of my small white stand which can hold pots of varying shapes and sizes.

How great does it look alongside our String shelf? With three different sizes to choose from, the options are endless when it comes to displaying pots and plants. I also love how they look in a set, with a mix of hanging varieties, fresh flowers, pots and glass vases as shown below.

In addition to glossy black and white powder coating, the plant stands are available in a clear coat option which brings out the raw industrial finish of the metal wire. They can be bought separately or as a set of three direct from the Trestle Union online store with free shipping within New Zealand and a flat $35 dollar rate to Australia.

Bravo to Julia for kicking off TEAM.WORK with a bang. I'm already looking forward to the next collaboration!
