Moodboard Series with Fisher & Paykel for Homestyle

$

The Winter Issue of Homestyle magazine hit the newsstands today and with the sudden cold snap we've been experiencing it couldn't be better timing! In part two of my editorial series in collaboration with Fisher & Paykel I've taken inspiration from a beautiful kitchen designed by Megan Burns and Christopher Glanville of Sydney-based CM Studio. Nordic in style, the all-white cabinetry and natural elements provide the perfect inspiration for darker, cooler months.
Design by CM Studio / Photography by Caroline McCredie

Light coloured surfaces work well in making a space appear brighter, while wooden flooring, patterned tiles and statement lighting add plenty of warmth and texture. A good choice for compact spaces where it makes sense to combine the kitchen and dining area, a table works equally well as an island in creating a central hub to gather, dine and entertain. The table and smaller black accents also help prevent the space looking too sterile. All-white appliances by Fisher & Paykel create a streamlined and cohesive look. The ActiveSmartTM French Door Refrigerator combines value with style, while the Double DishDrawerTM Dishwasher fits seamlessly into cabinetry.

Homes to Inspire | Graphic Elegance in Denmark

This beautiful home belongs to Hanne Berzant, the founder and former creative director of the Danish company By Nord. Just a short distance from downtown Copenhagen, it is also close to the forest and beach, making it the perfect location for Hanne and her family. Undoubtedly Nordic in style the elegant home combines design icons with functionality and comfort in equal measure. High ceilings and free-flowing light which Hanne says she has to have in order to thrive create a wonderful atmosphere, while the herringbone parquet floors throughout the house provide a graphic backdrop to the whole decor. Specially treated to create a greyish hue, they blend beautifully with interior's natural dusty palette. With these main elements and clean lines in place, Hanne says it's the soft things that give personality and depth to a home to make you feel like settling down on the couch under a blanket to recharge with the family. Natural materials like linen, ceramics and hand-knotted Berber rugs also provide plenty of warmth and texture.

Now in the process of launching a new lifestyle brand, Hanne applies the same eye for detail with her designs as she does with the decor of her own home.  She has chosen beautiful design furniture including the Hans Wegner Ox Chair and Arne Jacobsen's Grand Prix chairs which you can see around the dining table above, mixed with pieces from Italian and Spanish design houses. The simplicity and clean lines of these pieces fit perfectly with the home's original detailing.

Beautiful Floors + a Sunny White Bedroom

While it's no secret I love pale wooden floors, I'm also the first to admit that dark variety can look amazing. Today's home has a bit of both, but its the dark herringbone that initially caught my eye. The richness of the colour and texture of the grain is divine. Paired with grey walls and muted accents, the overall effect is really quite striking.

With the cold weather arriving on our doorstep this week, the sunny little bedroom is causing me to sigh a little. There's something so appealing about fresh white bedlinen and I love the softness of the sheer curtains gently blowing in the breeze.

Founded by Lea Korzeczek and Matthias Hiller, Leipzig-based creative lab STUDIO OINK focus on a variety of projects worldwide. Specialising in object and product design, they also work across the areas of interior design and set design as well as styling for a range of clients including both digital and print magazines. You will no doubt remember their beautiful residential interior project HOUSE CAL which circulated around the web last year. I've been checking into their website's News section regularly to see updates on their latest residential project HOUSE CAL II. Now completed, it doesn't disappoint. The first image of the living room corner is my favourite. Featuring a beautiful sofa by Patricia Urquiola, the fabric and pattern is divine! A match made in heaven with the stunning Atollo Light by Oluce

The neutral colour palette, muted accents and overall fine detailing have such a calming effect. See more of this stunning project here

Annaleena Leino Karlsson's Beautiful Styling for ESNY

Interior stylist and designer Annaleena Leino Karlsson has recently worked on styling projects for high-end real estate company ESNY and the results are simply stunning. The dreamy apartments are beautifully enhanced by Annaleena's thoughtful curation of design pieces, effortless styling and pared back elegance. The apartment below, located in Lärkstan, Stockholm includes the incredible Tiki sofa designed by Andreas Engesvik and beautiful lighting such as the Dusk Lamp by Sylvain Willenz above the dining table. The list goes on and on but I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves.

This next apartment also styled by Annaleena for ESNY was sold before the images even made it to their site but luckily for us she shared some on her blog. Simple grandeur at its very best, I imagine the owners are ecstatic with their new home!

Wood, Concrete, Art + Soul

In contrast to last week's posts which included a lot of bright, white spaces, pared back styling and herringbone flooring today's inspiration takes a slightly more eclectic turn. There are all the elements that I love including wood, concrete, linen, statement art and indoor plants but there is also that wonderful mix of old and new. Mismatched chairs, big comfy sofas, layered textiles and beautiful lighting all combine effortlessly, creating lived-in cosy homes with plenty of soul.

Dark and Alluring Bedrooms

Creating a cosy sanctuary is high on the list when it comes to bedroom styling and there's no denying that darker, richer tones evoke feelings of warmth and comfort. For an added sense of drama, charcoal or black walls will always deliver. Dark blues, earthy tones and my current favourite 'greige' (a combination of grey and beige) are also popular choices right now.

To create contrast, try pairing dark coloured walls with bedding in a softer hue. Alternatively, pair pale grey walls with bedlinen in deeper colours such as charcoal, navy or black. Continue the theme with interesting or moody artworks and add an array of textiles with linens, wool throws, cushions and rugs.

Lighting is also a crucial element and these bedrooms offer lots of ideas by way of pendants, wall lamps and bedside table lamps. For added texture I especially love seeing a touch of brass. Finish off with a plant or two and you'll have created a room you'll never want to leave!

Danish design company &Tradition have launched the 721 Grams Candle Holder designed by Isabell Gatzen. The Zurich based designer draws on her work with consumer electronics, working with premium natural products to create simple minimalist designs that are also playful and engaging. True to its name, 721 Grams is made of high quality, hand polished brass. This together with a design that encourages interaction -  the candleholder can be twisted, stacked or unstacked into any type of configuration - makes for a aesthetically beautiful and tactile object for the home.

I'm very excited to introduce you to the new collection Leinen 2016 by Jennifer + Smith today. The Sydney-based Kiwi design duo have drawn inspiration from the German Bauhaus movement with their new range of linen cushions and throws. Consisting of beautiful bold shapes and gorgeous colourways, these timeless pieces have arrived just in time for winter. Knowing firsthand how important the quality of fabric is to Jennifer + Smith I wasn't surprised to hear they had sourced something special for the new collection. The natural Wexford Linen, born and and woven in Lancashire, UK is an effortlessly natural fabric that they say won them over at first touch. Reflecting their mindful ethos and dedication to supporting local business, the collection has been direct-to-fabric digitally printed in Alexandria, Sydney, and is sewn in house at the Jennifer + Smith studio.

Danish designer and artist Kristina Krogh has launched a beautiful new collection of art prints. It's hard to choose but here a few of my favourites, including the Behind Blinds prints. Part of the Shades series featuring thin water colour lines, Kristina says they are "an interpretation of the interaction between light and shadow and the various changes in shapes and stories that emerge according to where and how the light falls." I'm also drawn to the incredible collection of serigraphs made from original artworks with thousands of dots made by hand. In particular, the gold metallic variations Sphere and Gather. The Apartment Amagansett by The Line

The Line apartments in New York and LA have been on my must-visit list for sometime and now there's a new addition, The Line - Amagansett. Founded by stylists Vanessa Traina and Morgan Wendelborn The Line apartments are an extension of the online store, filled with covetable pieces for the home which are all available to buy. Such a wonderful concept, I love that each apartment maintains The Line's signature aesthetic while incorporating its own interior style based on the location and surroundings.

Nestled near the eastern most tip of New York’s Long Island, between East Hampton and Montauk, Amagansett was established by farmers and fishermen before being developed as a summer resort in the late nineteenth century. The coastal plain village retains its clusters of Shingle-style getaways and clapboard cottages, and The Line has taken up residence in one. Built in 1970, the double-height home retains its massive oak beams which not only add rustic charm but also frame the distinct areas of the light-filled space, where large windows alternate with copperplate etchings by Bridgehampton-based artist Mary Heilmann.

Citta Design Winter 2016 Collection | In Store Styling

Last week I had the pleasure of doing some in store styling at Citta Design in Grey Lynn. Working with pieces from the Winter 2016 Collection 'Beautiful Utility - A Journey to 1970s Berlin' I created a living area along with some shelf styling at the front of the expansive store. The collection, which takes inspiration from a divided city; the prosperous, modern West Berlin, and the gritty, grey Soviet-led East Berlin, is a story of beautiful contrasts and colours from the 70s. Masculine structural shapes and forms are offset by a subtle feminine colour palette and understated patterning, all of which I embraced wholeheartedly. Wanting to create a cosy yet calming space, the restrained, muted naturals and subtle tonal variations combined effortlessly. The rays of sunshine were an added bonus, especially after a week of rain!

I started with some favourite key pieces of the season including the Hem Sofa and Hem Armchair in Oyster, designed by David Moreland. I paired these with the luxurious Bauen Bamboo Silk & Cotton Rug and  the Radial Round Coffee Table in Natural Oak

Cushions and throws are a must for creating warmth and adding texture and Citta Design have so many gorgeous options. I was in my element selecting from their extensive winter range. A few of my favourites include the Hicks Woven Cushion, the Albers Cushion and the Purl Stitch Wool Throw. For the shelves, I carried through a lifestyle theme in the same palette, with muted Ceramics, fragrant Candles, and textural Storage items and a touch of Brass

Located at 34 West Moreland St West Grey Lynn, my in store styling will be on show for two weeks. For other store locations and to shop online visit Citta Design

I'm also going to be sharing some at-home styling with this beautiful collection so look out for that early next week, along with a reader giveaway!

MuBu Home

Melbourne-based MuBu Home recently caught my attention when I stumbled upon some of their beautiful Scandinavian furniture. A timely discovery, co-founder Saskia informed me they were about to launch their very own line. Just released, I am very excited to share the new collection with you today, but first here's a look at some of the design brands they offer and the story behind MuBu Home

French-born Saskia and her Australian partner Michael spent several years travelling and living abroad before settling in Melbourne. Knowing that there is no place like home, they are passionate about creating that special sanctuary, and for them, that comes from simple, beautifully crafted furniture. They believe in filling the home with good quality things that resist the test of time but don’t cost the earth. Sourcing quality pieces of furniture and homewares from Scandinavian designers or those who are simply influenced by the principles of Scandinavian design, they love furniture that is strong, simple, honest and functional. International brands such as Sketch, Linnie Design and Bloomingville from Denmark sit alongside local brands such as the well-loved Kate & Kate. Ensuring that every single piece of furniture they pick is manufactured with quality at the core of the design process, Mubu's range consists of timeless pieces that are also fairly priced.

This ethos carries through to their own range of exquisitely simple, timeless furniture showcased below. Made in Australia with a lot of love, the new collection includes the Maya Queen Bed and two versatile Luna side tables; one round, and one rectangular. The gorgeous Maya Clothes Rack & Mirror would make a wonderful addition to the bedroom, while and Luna Console is perfect for the hallway.

BNZ GoodHome | Issue 7 + DIY Desk

My latest work for BNZ GoodHome went live today and I thought I'd share the styling I did as part of the ongoing Room Series. In this issue I visit the home workspace, giving tips on how to create a functional space that encourages productivity and the flow of creative ideas. Unlike the traditional office, the home workspace lends itself to a more personal approach in terms of interior design and styling and we thought a great way to start was with a DIY desk. Built by fellow contributor and building guru Cocksy, the minimalist desk is made from plywood and stainless steel tubing. Striking a balance between the industrial edge and a softer, more sophisticated look, I paired the desk with the stunning leather and steel PK9 Chair by Fritz Hansen and my own personal touches.

New + Noted | BoConcept

I'm very excited to be introducing you to some wonderful new products by BoConcept today. The first is Napoli, a corduroy velvet fabric developed exclusively for the Danish design brand. For today's post I styled the elegant Carlton sofa by Anders Nørgaard, which has been upholstered in the forest green Napoli. Not only a gorgeous colour to work with, I was immediately drawn to the tactile nature of the fabric. Soft to touch with a beautiful textural feel I was interested to learn that the fabric is composed of twisted fibres that, when woven, lie parallel in order to form a distinct pattern like a 'cord'. The resulting fabric looks as if it is made from multiple cords laid parallel to each other and then stitched together (hence the name corduroy). The vintage look of the fabric goes hand in hand with the Carlton sofa which was inspired by the atmosphere of elegant homes from the late 60s and early 70s. With a minimalist view point and steel frame, the sofa is beautifully light and refined. In addition to forest green, Napoli is available in burgundy, golden beige, silver grey, stone grey, taupe and turquoise.

The Copenhagen by Morten Georgsen for Bo Concept is a multi-functional wall system that celebrates Scandinavian heritage and simplicity. Designed for living, dining and office areas, there are options to suit every need whether it be for storage, entertainment, a display solution, bookcase, sideboard, or console. Suited to those who live in small homes and need to optimise every square meter, it also caters to those who live in large houses, who have space to build endlessly. With personalisation being a key factor, I was in my element styling the Copenhagen for today's post. Deciding to take advantage of our ceiling height, I chose a vertical unit which has an amazingly versatile combination of shelves, cabinets and drawers in varying sizes. Choosing a colour combination proved a little more tricky because there are some really beautiful options including walnut and charcoal, which I knew would look amazing with the forest green Carlton sofa. In the end I went with the the matt white and oak veneer because I can't go past this classic Nordic look. However it was the ash grey fronts really won me over. I love that they provide a new dimension, adding both warmth and contrast to the overall design. Styling the shelves with books, magazines, ceramics, and other accessories, I was amazed at the amount of space available for both displaying favourite items and storing those things you prefer to keep out of sight.

Following on from my in store styling at Citta Design last week, I'm now going to share some at home styling along with an exciting reader giveaway! As mentioned in last week's post I absolutely loved styling the living room scene in store with pieces from the Winter 2016 Collection 'Beautiful Utility - A Journey to 1970s Berlin'. Frama Studio Kitchen

Design studio Frama recently opened the doors to their inspiring new retail space and café in the centre of Copenhagen. Located in a former pharmacy, the incredible building which was built in the 1800s still has it’s original woodwork and architectural elements. The Frama collection of products which includes lighting, furniture and accessories, focuses on solid materials with natural finishes and simple geometry. Signalling a return to basics with  design that is honest and pure, their philosophy extends to their beautiful new kitchen system. Made up of freestanding pieces designed to work in any setting, the simple approach provides a refreshing contrast to today's increasingly complex kitchen designs.

The Frama Studio Kitchen is made up of three basic parts including a credenza, a tall cabinet, and a narrow side cabinet. Made in Denmark from solid Douglas Fir boards, the natural wood pattern gives the furniture a beautiful textural edge. Available in either a clear or dark stain, the cabinetry is perfectly framed in a black powder-coated anthracite steel grid and paired with Portuguese stone bench tops, adding further contrast. Frama’s beautiful Aj Otto Stoneware sits on top. The credenza can serve as a kitchen island or sideboard and can accommodate a sink, oven, or range. The single cabinet can be added for extra storage and worktop space, while the tall cabinet unit can house a refrigerator, oven, or microwave.

Dulux Colour Swatch Service | Part One

$

Today I'm going to introduce you to a fantastic new service by Dulux which allows you to order Large Colour Swatches online. Wanting to give my all-white home office a change, but knowing how important it is to test the paint colour at home first, this free service has been a real game-changer. The often daunting and time-consuming process has become a whole lot simpler, and with no need for sample pots, a lot less messy!

I started by visiting the Dulux Colour Wall where there are hundreds of paint colours to choose from. With some of my favourite Pins as my current inspiration, the 'Whites & Neutrals' and 'Greys' provided plenty of options for what I was after. You can order up to four swatches at a time, so I narrowed down my choice to a light grey and dark grey, both with green undertones, a beige and a 'greige' (grey/beige combo). Decided on my four colours, I simply added them to my Sample List as I went along. I then clicked on the 'Order Swatches' button, added my details and a few days later they arrived. Too easy!

Next came the fun part. With not a paint brush or test pot in sight, I simply grabbed my washi tape and placed the large swatches on my wall. Knowing how much my office light changes throughout the day and night and how this effects the appearance of colour, I moved the swatches around the room and took note of how the colours looked at different times of the day.

Styling and photography by Michelle Halford for TDC

The Dulux Colour Swatch service has been hugely beneficial in helping me make that important final decision, and what's more I really enjoyed the straight-forward and hassle-free process. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again for future projects.

Look out for Part Two where I will reveal the new look!

Thanks to those who entered the Citta Design Giveaway this week and huge congratulations to the winner, Rosie Turner!!

I recently received an email from Thisispaper announcing the opening of their new Flagship store. Established in 2011, the Warsaw-based design studio specialises in graphic design, art direction, retail design, print publishing and event planning. Also known for their beautiful range of products which are designed and crafted at their studio, their distinctively understated aesthetic carries through to the interior fitout of the new store. Located next to their studio, the rawness of the transparent resin floor is warmed up by the use of birch plywood, with an impressive shelving unit that extends over the entire back wall. Designed and made in collaboration with TYLKO who I featured here, it's the main element of the interior, yet it's white plywood finish blends seamlessly into the minimalist space.

Customers can browse the gorgeous range of goods while tasting high quality Japanese tea and listening to a selection of vinyls played on the Dieter Ram Braun Audio 1 Stereo. Sounds perfect to me.

Since its arrival last week, Karen McCartney's new book Perfect Imperfect has become a cherished addition to my collection of interior books. With styling by Glen Proebstel and photography by Sharyn CairnsPerfect Imperfect explores the aesthetic of the Japanese principle wabi-sabi which advocates that beauty is found in imperfections. A celebration of accident, curation and collection, it features Karen's thought provoking commentary and interviews accompanied by stunning visuals from the homes and studies of international and Australian creatives, including artists, video directors, designers, photographers, architects, ceramicists, retailers, hoteliers, gallery owners and visual merchandisers. A collaborative process that has taken years to come together, it has involved working across continents from New York to London, Paris and Belgium as well as around Australia.
Styling and photography by Michelle Halford for TDC

I have long been a fan of Sharyn Cairns work and the book reflects all that I love about her photography such as the moody colours, rich textures and play on light and shadow. The book embraces both current design objects and those that are well worn, the result being a collection of beautiful interior settings that mix comfort, design and offbeat beauty. Published by Murdoch Books, here's a small taste of what you'll find inside, including the incredible Belgium home of interior designer Bea Mombaers below.
