The Incredible Home of Pia Ulin

$

As a huge fan of famed interior photographer Pia Ulin, I love seeing and sharing the incredible spaces that she captures behinds the lens. Now, thanks to Residence magazine we get a glimpse of her own home in New York where she recently relocated from Sweden. Together with architects Bangia Agostinho Pia has completely transformed the Brooklyn loft and I'm sure you'll agree the results are amazing.

Photographed by Pia and styled by her colleague and close friend Lotta Agaton, the monochrome palette that characterises Pia's photography is evident throughout. The darker shades of black and grey give depth, while touches of burgundy as seen in the antique rug that belonged to Pia's parents provide richness and texture. Despite being newly renovated, the house has so much soul thanks to a mix of vintage pieces, Scandinavian design classics and beautiful black and white photography.

Beautiful greys carry through to the the kitchen, which is paired with marble, plywood and brass pendant lights. I also love the shelf that runs the length of the beautiful grey toned bedroom below. Perfect for placing photographs and favourite objects.

Surry Hills House by Benn + Penna

The transformation of this gorgeous terrace home was carried out by award winning architectural and interior design firm Benn + Penna. Located in the sought after inner city suburb of Surry Hills, Sydney, the thoughtful re-design locates the new bedroom and bathrooms spaces above an open-plan living area that opens onto intimate garden spaces at either end of the property. A delicately detailed steel stair rises through the middle of the building and drops natural light from a large skylight above into the centre of the house. Compact yet perfectly formed, the design has been beautifully executed, while the combination of clean lines, natural materials and a simple palette creates a lovely pared back, Scandi style.

Homebody by IVY MUSE

Kick starting the week with some exciting news, today IVY MUSE introduce their latest collection for AW16, HomebodyThe fourth collection for the Melbourne based Botanical Wares Studio, this beautiful range of limited edition pieces is my favourite yet!

Featuring simple forms and a gentle colour palette, IVY MUSE founders Jacqui Vidal and Alana Langan say Homebody draws its inspiration from the way people live and interact with plants in their homes in today’s age. “We wanted to encourage people to make the most of greenifying the space they have at home, whether big or small,” explains Jacqui. Homebody is about bringing a fresh perspective to the way we engage with plants and really showcasing them within the home” adds Alana.

Featuring seven Melbourne designed and made products, the collection sees the release of a brand new leather and steel plant hanger, the result of an exclusive collaboration with Melbourne based leather craftsman WootenAptly named Saturn, the steel rings are powdercoated in black or white and fit a variety of pot sizes and shapes.

The collection also comprises three gorgeous new plant stands; Willow, Cubby and Foundation. Available in black and white, each comes in a limited edition colour unique to that design. I particularly love how Cubby, whose unique colour is Nude, can be made into a stackable plant stand. This is done with the addition of the Cubby Leather Straps, another collaboration with Wooten

The popular IVY MUSE ceramic Table Tops which complement any IVY MUSE short plant stand, turning it into a side table or plant platform are now available in Onyx. Also new to the lineup is the Plant Shelf, which has been reissued with limited edition Brass brackets. Made from Vic Ash and powder coated steel, the shelf is super versatile. Not only can it be easily flipped so the pot plant sits to the right or left, it also comes with a handmade porcelain pot and features grooves for displaying art. Perfect!

To further compliment the beautiful new range, IVY MUSE commissioned Victorian ceramicist Ana Maria Jensen to produce an exclusive range of handmade limited edition pots. Wheelthrown from ironbearing stoneware, each pot has been combined with unique glazes to allow the clay to gently reveal its natural character. The stunning pots are available in Powder White and Eskimo Grey

Such a wonderful collection, I love that Homebody provides so many beautiful and functional ways to get creative with greenery. The new range can now be purchased directly from IVY MUSE. For a list of worldwide stockists, take a look here.

Moodboard Series with Fisher & Paykel for Homestyle

I'm really excited to have started working with Homestyle magazine on an editorial series in collaboration with Fisher & Paykel. Creating a Monochrome Moodboard that centres around an inspirational kitchen, I'll take cues from the design and style of the kitchen to select local products. Together with beautiful appliances from the Fisher & Paykel range the moodboard will give you ideas for creating a similar kitchen aesthetic. Kicking off the series with a Minimal Luxe kitchen style, here's a look at the first article which features inside the latest Homestyle - the Autumn issue, on sale now.

Carrer Girona, Barcelona designed by Katty Schiebeck

Taking inspiration from a beautiful kitchen created by Barcelona-based designer Katty Schiebeck of Katty Schiebeck Interior Design, I love the elegance of this space. The bold monochrome palette and graphic elements provide a touch of drama. To recreate a similar look, I've selected luxe marble floor tiles, marble-look benchtops and custom made black cabinetry. A pair of beautiful stools by NZ designer David Moreland add style and comfort. A simple graphic artwork unites the look, while floor length curtains add texture to the all-white walls, softening the room at the same time. I'm loving brass accents and with plenty of storage options around right now, we are spoilt for choice. The sleek appliances by  Fisher & Paykel enhance the kitchen’s luxe aesthetic. The incredible Pyrolytic Built-in Oven has a super generous capacity while the Combination Cook Top provides flexible cooking options, combining gas and induction to suit your style.

Space for Nature by Pernilla Algede - House of Beatniks

Based in Gothenburg, House of Beatniks was founded by Pernilla Algede, a talented graphic designer and photographer. A self-confessed free spirit with a passion for all things extraordinary, Pernilla is inspired by her travels around the world as well as her years living in Melbourne, which she cites as being one of the most creative and wonderful cities in the world. Having admired her graphic posters and photographic prints for some time, I was excited to discover her latest collection, Space for Nature. As the name suggests Pernilla's inspiration comes from nature, but for this series she wanted to touch on this subject at a deeper level. In contrast to the increasingly digital and fast spinning world we live in, she thinks many of us would do well to get closer to nature. To each day notice the magic that lies in the simple and natural. I couldn't agree more!

The stunning new photo prints are calm and restful, but they also convey an incredible depth and sense of drama. Photographed in the Swedish countryside, the series consists of three works; Behind the Pines, The Path and In the Ocean. Pernilla enlisted stylists Elin Kickén and Evalotta Sundling together with photographer Osman Tahir to create these beautiful images. While the dark wall provides a wonderfully moody backdrop, the addition of interesting textures and shapes further compliment the prints' striking elements of nature.

Beige is Back

As the movement from white and bright to more muted colours continues in Swedish interiors, there is simply no denying the fresh new appeal of beige. I love these caramel tones featured in My Residence, the wonderful new bookazine written by Residence editor Hanna Nova Beatrice. My copy arrived a few weeks ago and is providing so much inspiration right now.

Styling by Josefin Hååg and photography by Kristoffer Johnsson for My Residence

Paired with off whites, wood, brown leather and bolder black accents, this beautiful imagery demonstrates how it's done. If painting walls is a bit too drastic for you, look to inject some beige tones via simple homeware and accessories. The kitchen is a great place to start with earthy ceramics, cork and of course wood.

I hope you're all having a lovely Easter. I've embraced the chance to relax, have fun with the kids (we even braved the Royal Easter Show this year) and of course indulge in a good dose of chocolate. I find that when I get back on the Internet after a break I become completely immersed in catching up on the world of interiors. Great inspiration but a huge distraction when there is so much work to be done! I have some exciting projects on the go right now and I can't wait to share. In the meantime (with the first Musings + Moodboards post I have done in a very long time), here are a few things from my wishlist and mental scrapbook of ideas.

The kids have an extra day off school today so things are a little slow around here. I was however up early to check in with progress on my new blog design. Huge thanks to the incredibly talented and hard-working Ana Degenaar of Blog Milk who has kept going over the Easter break to make this happen. Ana's beautiful minimalist aesthetic is such a great fit for TDC and she has been a dream to work with on this customised design. I couldn't be happier!

Now on to a New + Noted post, starting with a peek at the Oliver Furniture 2016/2017 Collection. The Danish company born from a proud Scandinavian tradition of wood making are known for their simple design and high-quality craftsmanship. The stunning range includes the Seaside collection, inspired by easy beach-house living and the Wood Collection which highlights the natural beauty of wood as a material. Catering to both adults and children, the designs are both charming and timeless. And as always, the styling is impeccable! Packed with so much beautiful Nordic inspiration, check out the entire catalogue here.

Fred International, one of Australia's premiere distributors of Scandinavian furniture, lighting and homewares has reopened its doors after an extensive redesign. Founder Michael Liira and Managing Director Melissa Walker enlisted the help of interior stylist Simone Haag and interior designer Angela Harry to transform the space. Embracing the design principles of form and function, they have created segmented spaces that each tell a story. As a result, the Sydney showroom evokes the warmth of a Scandinavian home rather than the traditional furniture showroom experience.

The reopening coincides with the launch of a new website and the addition of three new brands to the Fred International stable: Friends & Founders, Fogia and Lightwork. These brands, along with Secto Design, by Lassen, Swedese, Lindholdt Studio and Rubn Lighting, will also be on show later this year when Fred International exhibits at Melbourne’s DENFAIR.

Fashion brand COS and furniture company HAY have added new home items to their collaborative range that was first launched last year. The spring collection includes furniture and accessories in a fresh palette of green, blue and pink, along with traditional Scandinavian light wood and cork finishes. The collection is now available from COS stores at London High Street Kensington, Vienna Neubaugasse and Gothenburg, with an edited selection available on the COS website.

Based in Denmark, DESIGN NATION was founded by Christian and Jens Brorsen in 2012 with a view to become an internationally recognised design brand with clear references to Scandinavian design. Working with designers like Chris Liljenberg Halstrøm, Søren Ulrik Petersen, Mads Sætter Lassen and Tobias Jacobsen, they clearly have an eye for beautiful design. This has resulted in a growing number of dealers across Scandinavia and Europe. Excited to see that they have also reached Australia, I was glad when they got in touch and knew I had to spread the word! Find out more here

The emails I receive in my inbox from Melbourne design brand Lightly always get my heart racing. Their beautiful new flat weave rugs Lightly Tribe and Desert Shapes are certainly no exception. Hand woven, these artful pieces are inspired by designer Cindy-Lee Davies spirited adventures to the Thar Desert, India. Made from 100% Cotton or New Zealand Wool, each piece is made by artisans in villages using custom hand dyed colours. The soft palette of rose, grey and cream palette evokes the desert sunset. Beautiful!

Main Ridge Farmhouse by Griffiths Design Studio

Today's home is a beautiful Farmhouse located in the lush countryside of Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula. Part of an ongoing project by Melbourne-based Griffiths Design Studio (they are currently working on stage two), the house is being transformed into a relaxed yet sophisticated modern home. Reflecting the natural elements of its surrounding rural environment, the new driftwood French Oak timber boards are one of my favourite features. Replacing the old polished time floors, they give the home a rustic warmth and natural continuity with the homes country setting, while newly rendered walls featuring a hand-rubbed, ultra-fine deep grey patina add further depth and texture. The muted palette and understated style is enhanced by the use of beautiful textiles, natural stone and leather.

Photography by Tom Blachford

The home also boasts an incredible connection to the outdoors with open-plan living spaces featuring floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Timber panelled walls and white-slatted ceilings add to the sense of light and space. I can't wait to see more.

Homes to Inspire | Warm Colour Contrasts

Later this month I'll be collaborating on a paint-related post which is exciting territory for me. Always on the lookout for inspiration, I'm drawn to greys and beige tones right now. This home has a combination of both and it works really well. It also demonstrates ways of adding colour to a predominantly white interior. In keeping the ceilings, skirting boards and window frames white, there are gorgeous contrasts, while still maintaining a sense of continuity throughout. Understated yet relaxed, the styling incorporates muted tones and monochrome accents to add further warmth and harmony.

Take Two

Styling for me often involves keep moving things around until I'm happy with the result. Even though I always try to start with a clear vision, there is always some tweaking here and there. These images of some recent styling around home demonstrate how I move from one look to another. With subtle changes it can be a bit like 'spot the difference' but for me, it's an important process that usually ends up with a clear winner. Which look do you like the best, the first or second?

Based in Gothenburg Grey Deco was founded by interior stylist Elin Rydblom. Working with well known Swedish real estate sites such as Stadshem and 55 Kvadrat, Elin's work is becoming more and more recognisable as the Grey Deco portfolio grows. Completely in love with her style, I've picked out some the bedrooms she has worked her magic on. Offering plenty of bedside styling inspiration, I particularly love the floating box shelves, mix of pendant, wall and table lamps, black and white photography, and of course the perfectly imperfect crinkled linen.

Copenhagen-based artist Silke Bonde has released a beautiful new watercolour collection entitled Under Water. The idea for the collection came about after a recent diving trip to Indonesia where Silke, who is a certified diver, felt incredibly inspired by the life and beauty beneath the surface. She says "When you dive under the sea a whole new world full of life reveals itself to be explored. Engaging colours, spectacular shapes and beautiful fish provide the framework for this amazing underwater world". Created with watercolours to reflect the organic shapes and the floating life, Under Water consists of three stunning art prints; Melt, Stripe and Dot

Aren't they gorgeous? The prints are available worldwide via the Silke Bonde webshopI'm also very happy to advise that our dear local friends norsu are the exclusive Australian stockist of the new collection which you can pre-order here

While we are on the topic of norsu, I am flying over to Melbourne on Monday to finally meet with the team! Beyond excited, we have some exciting projects planned which I can't wait to share with you very soon. During this time the blog posting will be less regular but I will do my best to schedule in a couple of posts before I head away. And as always, let's stay connected via Instagram!

VISSEVASSE Launches Botanica by Vee Speers

Exciting news for fans of Vee Speers today, the renowned Paris-based Australian artist has launched a new series, Botanica. The series, which features four captivating floral images, is being exclusively printed and sold as posters by Danish company VISSEVASSE who I first featured in this Friday Finds post. While the subject matter may differ from Vee Speers two incredible photographic portrait series The Birthday Party and Thirteen, the flowers have actually been photographed as if they were people - as portraits, allowing her to bring out the personality of each of them. Vee says the Botanica series symbolises a moment’s calm in a world that is growing increasingly complex. There is no doubting the calming effects of nature, and what a beautiful way to bring some of it indoors.

The detail and colours are exquisite and you really can see their personalities coming through don't you think? The beautiful posters are now available to purchase worldwide from VISSEVASSE

Back into it after an amazing few days in Melbourne, if you've been following on Instagram you will understand why I am a little tired today! Not only did I have the pleasure of styling the annual norsu shoot, the team very kindly arranged an event while I was there with industry friends. It was great to put names to faces after working with so many wonderful people these last few years, and quite timely being that it is TDC's fourth birthday today!

Of all the stunning brands I got to work with on the norsu shoot, Cultiver was definitely a favourite and today I am thrilled to be sharing their latest lookbook with you. Showcasing the gorgeous new colour range for Winter 2016 including Navy, Olive and Indigo stripe, the images are absolutely exquisite. The collection also includes a new euro pillowcase 'White with Navy Border'. A timeless design, it pairs beautifully with the Navy Linen Duvet Cover as shown below.

Inspired by luxe minimalism, Cultiver says the expanded colour range now offers so many styling options. With a beautiful Melbourne home providing the perfect location, Cultiver teamed up with Richard Hall & Son to demonstrate how these different looks can be achieved.

Some more creative talent from Melbourne today, I Love Linen first featured on TDC in this New + Noted post last year. Specialising in quality lifestyle linens and accessories, the extensive product range spans all facets of daily life including sleeping, bathing, cooking and relaxing. Sourcing the best fabrics, designers, and makers from around the world, founder Lauren Roe was actually heading over to India as I landed in Melbourne! Fortunately she has found time to send me imagery of her beautiful new collection from her own brand The Bedroom Society to share with you today.

Made from 100% French Flax Linen, my favourite pieces would have to be the duvet covers that feature a double sided striped design in a choice of Milk, Navy and Softy Grey on the reverse. I love the versatility of these, allowing you to make the bed up with the stripes on the top or underside of the duvet, as demonstrated in the images above. The collection also includes an extensive range of linen duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases in gorgeous colours to mix and match.

The launch coincides with the opening of the newly designed Collingwood showroom, where they offer personal style consultations.

What a beautiful space. I'd be in my element surrounded by all that luxurious linen! The showroom is located at 17 Little Oxford Street, Collingwood and is open for consultations Monday to Friday (by appointment) from 10am to 4pm.
